Bringing Shabby Back – The New Kitchen Table

Well, it’s not exactly new, but it’s new to the kitchen anyway.  I mentioned here that we decided to make a little table switch-a-roo.  We moved the table and chairs that was in our kitchen into the dining room, and we moved the dining room table and chairs into the kitchen.  It was a win win because it gave the dining room a more casual look (which is great for our make it less formal so we’ll use it more often initiative), and it gave the kitchen a little more elegance.  The best part truly is that this little switch-a-roo gave both rooms a totally new look for $0 dollars!  Holla!

I decided to give the old dining room/new kitchen table a new look for it’s new home in the Phillips’ house.  So with a little JT and Rachel Ashwell in mind, I brought shabby back.  And here’s how I did just that.

Here’s the dining room table in it’s new home in the kitchen.

I used a sanding block to lightly sand the surface and then used the Kilz oil-based primer pictured above.  (When applying primer you want to keep it very light.  You will actually see the wood peeking through the primer.)  Once the primer was dry, I added 2 coats of Valspar acrylic paint matched to Waverly’s Cafe Cream (which is the same color as the walls in the dining room – how’s that for a little flow).
When the paint was dry, I got my sanding block back out and lightly rubbed the edges, legs, and a few other places on the table top to create this look.
Then I added 2 coats of polycrylic to protect the finish and make it easy to clean.
And here’s the finished product!
It’s my new kitchen table, my old dining room table with a new look, and it’s totally bringing shabby back – and I think it just might be bringing sexy back too!  I’m in love with it!  I don’t know what I love more – the new look- or the fact that it was FREE!  I already had all of the supplies because I used them in the ongoing dining room redo.  I had to put the dining room on pause to outfit the kitchen with her dining room hand-me-downs.  I’ll get back to it soon though- don’t worry.  Oh- and I’ll finally be showing you how the chair makeover came out.  As you can see from the pictures above, I finally finished painting them black.  Check back soon to see them finished!
So, what do you think – are you going to be bringing shabby back anytime soon?!  You better bring it!  (Who knows what movie that line is from?)

  • How nice. That really makes a difference. I'm going to look around and see if you have the dining rm. pictured, too. It looks like you have plans for the chairs.

  • OMG I think that is the exact dining room set we gave to my brother in law when we moved. I was so done with the "formal" look and can't believe how you transformed it with paint! Love the whole look of your kitchen and dining area – beautiful!!

  • Since it's been a bit, how does it hold up with cleaning after eating on the table? My grandmother's table and buffet are free to me & I'm thinking of doing this with them. But, I don't want to purchase glass for the top. It will be used daily. Any suggestions or hints would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • It's holding up great! The distressed finish makes this table really usable – basically my kids can't hurt it because any marks look like they're supposed to be there. I wipe it down dally and it hasn't ruined the finish. Hope that helps!
