Sittin’ Pretty – Another Chair Makeover Story

I showed you this chair before when I exposed all of my current unfinished projects.  I bought it a while ago with the entry foyer in mind.  I thought it was a decent price at $38, considering the little makeover I was planning to give it wouldn’t cost me anything since I already had the supplies.  Unfortunately, the hubs hated it.  Boo! (And not the Halloween kind of Boo, more like just plain old sad-faced Boo.)  Due to the fact that we have totally different decorating styles, we have this sort of unwritten rule that any house purchase under $50 can be made without each other’s consent, but if the non-purchasing party hates it all bets are off.

I didn’t want to return it though; so we compromised.  He agreed the chair could stay so long as it wasn’t the first thing you saw when you walked through the front door.  Fair enough.  I decided to use it in the guest bedroom.  Since I am a last word kind of girl I must say, “I do whole-heartedly believe that if he had at least given the chair makeover, I was planning to perform, a chance he would have ended up liking it in the entry foyer if not loving it.”  Moving on 🙂

The makeover was quick and easy.  I just spray painted it white.  I did this very lightly to let some of the wood show through.  I didn’t sand it first because it was not a shiny surface (does that make sense).  I was aiming for a little shabby chic-ish effect.

When the paint was dry I sanded the edges just a little.  I recovered the seat cushion with a little material I stole from the drapery panels I took down in the guest bedroom.  See the light green panels below.
The guest bedroom redo is almost finished!

I took those panels down, and decided to use another pair of panels that I already had.  I didn’t want these to go to waste though, and I couldn’t really use them anywhere else in the house.  So I just cut them up a little – GASP!  I used a little of the material to recover the seat cushion, and I used a little of it to add some length to the new panels that I put up.  (Post about the drapery panel lengthening coming soon.)  So here it is all finished and prettied up!

Totally sittin’ pretty!  I’m in love!  The perfect little guest bedroom chair for laying down a cardy or  dropping a handbag.  This is not the makeover I had in mind when I bought this chair, which is funny because the last chair makeover I performed ended up completely different from what I had originally planned too!  Compromising can be a really good thing!
Have you made any decorating compromises lately?  Have you made any chair makeovers lately?  Would you ever cut up a drapery panel to use the material to recover something?  Sorry- I’m a question asker – just ask the hubs – this is his favorite one of my qualities 🙂
