Ummmm…..Not Quite Sure About This

Ok, so one night a couple of weeks ago I got this totally random idea.  I was enjoying a glass of wine with the hubs, and I thought hmmmm…..what if I jazzed up the old wine bar just a bit?

We’ve had this wine bar for about 7 years now.  We bought it from Target online, and it has definitely served it’s purpose.  I remember feeling like such a “grown up” when we made this purchase 🙂  Now that I’m over the glow of “being a grown up is cool” because I’m so obviously a rockin’ my thirties full-fledged adult, I felt like maybe it was time to give the old wine bar a little makeover.  Fast forward to the very next morning, and I started doing this.

I wish I could give you a tutorial here, but I just basically played with the tape until I liked the result.  I sanded with a fine grit sandpaper only in the areas I was planning to paint.  Then I painted it with a white paint that I already had on hand (the same color as our trim).  When the paint was dry I sanded it again to give the stripes a distressed look.

Then I used a wipe-on poly in satin finish over the entire surface.  I also changed the hardware.  I found these cute little blue and white striped knobs at the Hob Lob.  (They have such a great selection of hardware.)

I also brought in a new lamp (Target) and a new art piece (Tuesday Morning).  Here’s the result of my completely random idea.

I’m not quite sure about this.  I looooove the lamp and my new artwork.  The jury’s still out on the bar.  The hubs liked it better before (but he doesn’t really like painted furniture and he also thinks that chevron stripes look like lightning bolts), but he does like this new lamp (he was the one who suggested we bring it home) and artwork better than what we had going on before.  What do you all think?  Likey or no likey?  If no likey, what do you think I should do with it now?  Do you ever get random ideas late at night and then bust out the paint the very next morning?  Or am I the only crazy lady that acts on her random thoughts?

(For the newbies here – the old cash register is an antique the hubs inherited from his grandfather.  It works, although we don’t usually run a cash bar 🙂

  • Ok, being honest…I liked it better before too. I don't like the white "X" part because it stands out too much. I think it would be better if just the top had the pattern (no white on the other parts) or if you toned down the white with a glaze. It's not horrible by any means, I just preferred it before.

  • Love the trimmed-out drawers and new hardware, gives it a crisp, fresh feeling. Love the new lamp, and like either the before or after artwork. Not sure I love the chevron stripe, but I don't love partially-painted furniture and I'm feeling a little over chevron, so maybe it's just personal preference. If you aren't sure about the look, maybe re-cover the top with a blue and white wallpaper, and trim it out with the white paint? That could be super cute….

That said, I love those wacky moments of inspiration. Sometimes mine turn out, sometimes not so much. But you have to give it a try, right?

  • Please…I invented the crazy late hour redo. 🙂 And trust me…weird is going to Walmart for hardware at 3am so you can put the toilet back in place after you redid the bathroom floor and don't want your hubby to think you have completely lost your mind.

I like where you are going with the bar…but I say take it a step further and paint the whole thing. I think the white is refreshing and adds to the new art….plus it will add to the depth of the new color surge with the lamp.

Do it…:) It is already late…do it.

    Cheers~

  • I think it looks good, I love patterns, all kinds of patterns anyways 🙂

I LOVED that horse photo in the first pic though… maybe not the color of the frame, but I love anything 'Horse' so when I saw that I was sold… even though it was in the 'before' shot lol.

  • I love that cash register!! What a treasure!!
As far as the bar, since you asked….I like the white on the front, but I don't care for the stripes on the top…but that's just my opinion.:-)If we don't act on our ideas at the moment…they'll never get done, at least around here.So do it…no matter how late!

  • Love that lamp….can't find it myself though, still looking. I think the white needs to be toned down a bit…too much contrast. I love that cash register too!!!

  • Oh I love the painted X and insets! Im so sorry but I tend to agree with the painted chevrons on top though. But if you love it that is the ONLY thing that matters :0) You see it every day not us! I love Megan's idea of painting the whole thing, but I too am a painted furniture fan. Maybe paint it all one color while still leaving the X and insets a different color for a bit of pop?

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE that cash register! Good thing we don't live close because I'd be plotting a heist every spare moment ;-)! lol Anyway as for weighing in on the chevrons, I think I like the idea, but it's a bit stark on such dark wood. Maybe, can you stain or glaze or antique over it to tone it down a bit? Really pretty wine bar. I'd love one of those too :-). Hope your week is off to a great start my friend!

  • I love all of the new accessories…really adds a springy touch to your decor. I like what you did with the wine bar too, but I'm with Megan…I think I would paint the whole thing white! I would really brighten your space!

  • I really like Carmel, it makes for an interesting piece and your artwork and lamp are beautiful, LOVE that lamp! If the white stands out too much you can maybe glaze over it a bit to blend more.
I love late night ideas that just spring into you head!

  • I'm constanting coming up with ideas and re-do's for the interior. I'm glad the weather is warming up so that I can start working in the gardens instead though. What is it that you don't think you like about your bar now? You wanted it to look more contemporary, right?

  • I wonder if it is just that the white is too bright? I kind of liked the taped photos. I think, I would antique the white just a bit.

So how are you feeling about it after living with it for a while?

  • I am not crazy about the chevron (and I love me some chevron) on the top. I think you may want to consider painting the whole thing out and doing something like:

    1) Gold/Silver Leaf the top

    2) Glaze the piece in antique grey/black

    3) Remove the top completely and see if your local salvage yard has any marbel remanents.

  • I liked it better before. I probably would have tried to redo the top (something other than paint) and maybe changed the knobs. I don't care for the partial paint.

  • Okay, here is my two cents:

I think you did a great job! I like the fact that it's not painted all the way. We ALWAYS paint the entire piece. It's refreshing to still see some of the wood. The lamp and the art just made it even better:-)

    My two cents!
