Color My World Challenge – Fabric

I’m back today with the fabric challenge.

I kind of cheated.  I didn’t sew anything, upholster anything, no-sew anything, hot glue anything – nope I didn’t use fabric in any of the traditional ways.  Like I said, I sort of kind of cheated.  I did use some grey fabric though.

My boy came home last week with these in his school folder.

He made them in art class, and I fell madly in love with them.

So off to the fabric store I went to look for some complimenting fabric at an affordable price.  I found a scrap in the back of the store, and it just so happened to be the right color for this challenge – grey!

I used it to wrap the mat in the frame (Target).

I added some brass thumb tacks around the opening.
Then I borrowed an idea from my girl Courtney and added a gold detail to the frames with a little rub ‘n buff.
Courtney’s method calls for spray painting painter’s tape, but the weather wasn’t great for spray painting.  I tried using the rub ‘n buff on the tape but it wasn’t working too well; so instead I taped off the sections I wanted to be gold and just rubbed directly on to the frames.  It didn’t take long at all, and I really like the tarnished brass look I ended up with in the end.  Sometimes you gotta just roll with the punches in a middle of a diy project ya know?!
All in all, a blank boring spot at the top of my staircase went from this……
to this.
It makes my son so proud to see his artwork framed for everyone to see, and I LOVE having original pieces in my home.  ðŸ˜‰

This challenge really helped me to get quite a bit accomplished in my entry foyer, and I’m really grateful for the motivation!  To see the other ways I challenged myself to add some grey in my entry foyer check here and here.

  • They are gorgeous Carmel! I love how you use your kids' artwork all over your house and really elevate them with the way they're displayed. It makes your home so meaningful and stylish all at once. The nailhead trim and painted corners look fabulous and the grouping is perfection at the top of your stairs!

  • Love the art! Way to think outside the box! I've been so curious about rub n buff so this answers some of my questions about what all it works on. Looks great!

  • INCREDIBLE! How can any piece of art beat one done by your own child! Love the frames with the gold and that color red is to die for! Do you mind me asking what color it is? I am in love with it! Such a creative idea-love it!

  • I love the little corner and nail details, those are my favorite! I actually just bought some gold thumbtacks, I had not thought to use them in frames.

Your son is quite the artist, really those are so interesting. They look great all together.

  • Um, hello, awesomeness! I love that! How cool that you have one of a kind art work made by your son in some awesome one of a kind frames. Sheer genius!

  • Another GRAND SLAM! You hit it out of the park yet again! I'm having a love affair with Rub n' Buff right now, too so this frame look will be on my "to do" list. Still, the best part is using your child's art work.

  • I am SO impressed with you! I just cut my own photo mat for the first time, and let's just say results were not perfect (ha!) so I thought about covering them in fabric and concluded that it was outside my skill set. 🙂 But here you are, with these amazing frames! The gold detail takes them over the top!

  • What a great project to feature your son's art! Thanks for making Rub 'n Buff part of the project. I'd like to post this on our Facebook page if that's ok.
