Hey, I'm Carmel! Welcome to Our Fifth House!
I guess you can tell by the blog name that I’ve moved quite a bit. Moving has allowed me to play with design and really hone my personal style. In each house my family has called home, I have learned something new about decorating.Though I don’t pretend to be an expert and am certainly not a hardcore DIY’er, I’m not afraid to decorate to the beat of my own drum or pick up a power tool every now and again. Fearlessness should never be underestimated! I’ve learned that a lot can be accomplished with a little gusto, hot glue, and grace. And I believe making your home your happy place should be fun not complicated. If there’s a design rule I follow, it’s this: A home should reflect the personality of the people who live under its roof. After all, home is the setting of your life story!
I started this blog as a creative outlet back in 2011, right after we moved into our fifth house…….hence the name. Little did I know back then that this blog would see me through a feature in a national magazine, a move to a new city (house #6), a new home build (house #7), and an upcoming design book (If These Walls Could Talk)! Though moving to Charleston, South Carolina was a dream come true, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Lexington, Kentucky, and the house that inspired the start of this blog, our fifth house.
It’s been an honor to have had projects featured in Family Circle, All You, and Cottages & Bungalows Magazines, as well as to have had the opportunity to collaborate with some of my favorite brands such as Lowe’s Home Improvement, Spoonflower, Ballard Designs, Minted, Houzz, Joss & Main, FrogTape, The Tile Shop, Grandeur Hardware, and The Home Depot.
Creating unique spaces filled with personality is my passion, and I love encouraging others to do the same in their homes! Here at Our Fifth House you’ll find simple DIY project ideas, practical decorating advice, thrifted treasures, stylish finds, & reading recommendations…because my love for creating a home all started with my passion for fiction. I believe every home has a story to tell, and I want to help you tell yours!
