First I want to say thank you so very much to the fabulous bloggers that participated in my first ever guest blogger series last week! Thanks to Michelle from Ten June, Michaela from Michaela Noelle Designs, Courtney from A Thoughtful Place, Erin from Richmond Thrifter, and Rene from Cottage and Vine for being kind enough to share what they’ve learned from a blog! Big virtual smooches and hugs for allowing me some time away to get a few things done around here.
You may remember from this post that I moved the dresser that was in my dining room into the family room. Here it is in it’s new home.
Well, you see, I made this move because I finally found the “one”.

Here she is sitting in the garage. |
I’d been looking for a dresser to use as a buffet that I could paint white and distress for my dining room. I wanted something in white for a number of reasons. I like the look of wood tones mixed with painted furniture; and since we have a dark espresso dining room table, I knew it would look great. Also I felt like having a white dresser would make the room look larger as it would sort of disappear against the white wainscoting in the room. I didn’t want to paint the one we already had in there because it’s a family heirloom my hub would disown me if I ever came near it with a paint brush.
When I found the dresser pictured above at a local consignment store (Another Man’s Treasure), I think I may have squealed right there in the middle of the store! It was the exact right measurements, already white, and I loved the hardware! I didn’t feel too bad for paying just under $200 for this piece because I knew I wouldn’t have to spend the time or money to paint or change the hardware, and this piece is very well made (dove-tailed and quite heavy).
All I did was clean her up with a little TSP, remove the ugly drawer liners (tried to replace them – more on that later),
lightly sand with a 100 grit sanding block, and then I added a little antiquing glaze to the edges.
I finished it off with a coat of hand rubbed poly in satin (which will yellow a bit over time. I’m good with this happening – it’s all part of the distressed look I want.) The best part is I already had all of those supplies on hand.
Here it is!
This is what I had in my dining room before.
This is what I have in here now.
I’m in love! I even changed the lamps and brought in this mirrored tray (all from Target!). I’m planning to use the old lamps in my daughter’s room. The new glass lamps ($49.99) are fillable which makes me giddy with holiday excitement (which I realize makes me sound crazy. I just let my freak flag fly people!) That price tag isn’t too bad when you compare similar glass lamps. Even this somewhat similar lamp from Ikea is $49.99 and would require me to drive over an hour to bring it home. The mirrored tray I actually bought a while ago and have been trying to decide where to let it live. I like it here with my tea set. It adds just the right amount of glam.
I’ve always loved mixed metals, and I’m loving the way the gold and silver/stainless are working together in here. The contractor took out the bi-swing door when he laid down the bamboo floors, and I liked the doorless look so much that I’ve decided to keep it this way. I’m loving the way the stainless on the lamps plays off of the stainless fridge, and the gold accents play off of the mirror leaning in the corner.
