My internet service has been causing me issues…….so I changed providers. Long story short, my post is late. I know you’ve been waiting on the edge of your seats for this one. š Without further ado.
This is the story of an ugly rug.

and a terrible photographer. |
I found her at HomeGoods priced at $99. Not a bad price for the large 8 x10 ft. size. Considering how ugly she was though, they probably should have paid me to take her off their hands. Just sayin’. I honestly don’t think anyone would have bought this thing unless they had planned to do what I did. You may not be able to tell from the above photo (because of the terrible quality of the photo), but this is a natural fiber sisal rug that was screen printed. The other side of this rug was au naturale, which is just the way I like ’em.
Remember when I posted about my love for layering rugs? Well, that was my master plan. Insert evil laugh here. The only snafu was when I rolled her out I found the “sku”. Drats!
Not to be foiled, I busted out my black acrylic craft paint and painted on a border.
Two coats did the trick. Here she is looking all swan like. š
The part under the sofa I totally skipped. I just painted as far in as you could see. Didn’t even bother moving the couch because I’m all lazy like that and no one will be the wiser. Except for you, of course. Shhhhh- don’t tell anyone I’m the laziest diy blogger in blogland.
See, you can’t even tell.
A closer look for those that might want to “put your thing down flip and reverse it”, and by thing I mean your own ugly rug. Or in normal speak – if you happen across a rug that you might like to paint a border on here’s a closer look at what the acrylic paint will look like. (Normal speak is boring; Missy Elliot speak is more fun!)
It’s not totally solid. Another coat would probably remedy that, but I actually like it this way. The paint has held up really well. It dried super fast. I didn’t use any tape. Eyeballing it seemed to work out just fine. If you want a totally perfect line taping it off first would be your best bet. I’m not usually in to “perfect”. Mainly because I’m lazy and even with both kids in school now I still turn into a pumpkin when the clock strikes 2:35 (that’s when the school bell rings). So, I have to pick and choose the projects that are going to take up my time. This one took maybe 30-45 minutes.
I lala-love her! This room was too big for the 5 x7 rug alone. Layering it over this larger 8 x 10 was a much better fit for the room.
Ummm……did you notice anything else new in this room? I finally got my cowhide on!
I drove up to Ikea last week and came home with “my precious”. (Oh heaven help me – from The Ugly Duckling to The Lord of the Rings – how on Earth do I do this?!) I’ve been saving for my mootastic ottoman forever. Some things you diy, others you save-your-pennies-to-buy. I know it isn’t every ones cup of tea, but it is so me. I love the color, the texture, and the shape. It adds an extra seat without blocking my hubs precious, “the t.v”. God forbid we block the television! Anyhow, it adds balance and texture without taking up too much space.
I like the way the black and white plays off of the other black and white elements in the room.
This stripey goodness is also an Ikea find! Love!
Oh, and just for fun here’s a closer look at what I had on the coffee table. Key word being had.
Then I made my Missoni mission to Target and came home with this sassy girl!
Oh hello lover! š I’m in love with a vase. Yes, I know I have issues. I’ve mentioned before that I like to let my freak flag fly! It’s just so much fun to be YOU! Fearless, do what you love and unconcerned with whether or not anyone else will love it as much as you do!
But I am curious; what do you think of my ugly duckling rug, new ottoman and Missoni vase? Anyone else doing any layering lately? Of rugs that is. Did you shop Missoni on Tuesday? Was your store crazy? What did you get? Tell me, tell me!

IT all looks fantastic. I would have to say that I'm in love with that throw, like I want to drive 45 min to Ikea tomorrow, love it.
