Happy Friday!!! There are “homemade” donuts on the menu this weekend, and I am excited!
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’m taking a break from my usual Friday chair love. I’ll most likely bring it back after the new year; so keep sending your fabulous chair makeovers and beautiful chair purchases my way. Until then, who knows what I’ll be posting about on Friday?! It should be fun flying by the seat of my pants. 😉
Today I’m popping in for a quick minute to show you what I have finally decided to use to dress my little girlfriend’s bed. It’s taken, oh, about a year and half to find the “right” mix. I believe the easiest way to start a bedroom design is to start by dressing the bed first. Once the linens are chosen it makes it so much easier to envision the entire room’s design plan. I think this is why it takes me so long to find something. There’s a lot riding on the bed’s ensemble. 😉 Anyhow, I’ve finally found something she and I both love!
I love this color combo – turquoise and pink – especially in these soft, muddy tones. Clearly the walls are going to be painted; the lavender on them now was inherited from the previous owners. I’m pretty sure none of those paint swatches are a winner. I’m thinking of going with grey. More on that later. Anyhow, this is from the DwellStudio for Target line. I know birds are everywhere, as is chevron, but the girl and I still like them. The print on this bedding actually reminds me of a wallpaper my mom had in our powder room when I was a kid. I think a kid’s room is the perfect place to have some fun with both color and pattern. The pink polka dot pillow sham (PBK) was part of her toddler room as was the bed skirt. I found the pink tulle bed skirt on Ebay years ago. I think it adds a little whimsy which is just perfect for my little girlfriend.
The home sweet home pillow was a $12 clearance find from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I added the little crocheted flowers. I used a coordinating piece of turquoise fabric to make the leaves. You can find the tutorial for how to make these flowers here.
The actual bed is my favorite part. It belonged to her great grandmother. I love this short four poster bed, and I have no plans to paint. It’s going to stay as is – well it may get a little freshening with some Restor-a-Finish. So, now that I have finally dressed the bed, it’s time to get crackin’ on this room design. I’m going to call the design plan – vintage chic with a touch of whimsy. Sounds good doesn’t it? Hopefully it turns out that way. 😉 More details to come. Speaking of taking your time with a room design, have you tuned in to this discussion on design trends in 2011 at Centsational Girl? I really loved what Janell had to say about slowing down and not just speeding through the design process. I have found in my own home that the rooms I love the most are the ones that have taken time to come together. In addition, taking your time allows you to really enjoy the process. Thanks to Janell for her wonderful insight and to Michelle for putting this discussion together!
So, how do you tackle a bedroom design? Do you start by dressing the bed?
What a sweet bed; I love it. It looks so pretty and girly, but also grown up too, so she could have it for a long time.
