What to Wear for Christmas Family Photos

Ever since I stumbled across that outfit on Pinterest I’ve been looking at my wardrobe with a new set of eyes; combining and layering patterns and colors that I never would have paired before.  It’s been really fun to rediscover items I’ve had for years and make them look new again by pairing them differently than I have in the past.  Nothing stretches a wardrobe budget further than mixing and matching to create loads of different outfit options!  I’ve been on a green kick lately, and I’ve always been a la-la-lover of leopard print!  I decided to pair my new love with my old love, and the pairing was sort of like a match made in heaven.  At least I thought it was .

Colored pants seem to be all the rage this season, and I’ve had these green J.Crew cords for years.   I love being able to reinvent an item I’ve had (and had gotten sort of tired of) in a fun new way!  I never would have thought to pair the leopard print with green, but just like that Burberry and olive green outfit this just seems to work.   The leopard sweater was a BR purchase from a few months ago.  I also rummaged my jewelry box and found these cuties that my Aunt gave me (and I had forgotten all about).

Aren’t they pretty?!  They add another little hint of green pulling the outfit together.  I’m a fan of details.

Anyhow, I was really loving this step out of the “dark jeans with a top” box that I usually live snuggly inside, and decided that maybe I could outfit my family based on these colors for this years Christmas card.

Here’s what I put together – Option numero uno.

The carpet isn’t doing anyone any favors.  You get the idea though right?  The main question is – should the hub wear jeans or tan cords?

Option numero dos.

What do you think?  I don’t want to be too matchy-matchy, but I do want us all to coordinate.  I don’t usually put this much thought in to stuff like this.  I have an idea for a little diy backyard photo session, so I’m kind of all pumped up for our family Christmas card this year.  We’ll see how it turns out.  It should be interesting to say the least.  ðŸ˜‰

Before I sign off, let’s get a close up of the girl’s ensemble.

Heaven help me and my wallet – why are girls so much fun to dress?!  This whole outfit is from Gap.  I had a rewards certificate and a coupon – woot!  I can’t even handle these boots!

She’s been singing……boots with the fur.  ðŸ˜‰   Yeah – she knows that song.

Are you starting to plan for your Christmas cards?  Anyone else feeling inspired to try mixing up your wardrobe in fun new ways?

  • I can't take it!!! At first I was like "Carmel is going to look good!", but then I saw your daughters outfit and was like whoa! Those boots and that skirt is HOT!

Ok, I like #2! Cords for the hubby and son! Perfect:)

  • Carmel – I'm loving your leopard!
And your daughter's boots – ahghghg! So stinkin cute.
100% jeans for your hubby. My husband, kids and I over-matched for a photo a few years ago and I can't even bring myself to display it! Plus jeans are so neutral in my humble opinion. Love the greens & creams!

  • First of all, love the green cords! You must have read my mind about the Christmas card outfit. Would be a good idea considering my son wore his slippers in our card last year.

  • I'm loving option #1!! I think the bright splash of green and blue is so pretty and really brightens the look. I love the different patterns and texture you are mixing. It all looks fabulous! Can't wait to see your little daughter rockin' her new look. Adorable!

  • bahahaha…my five year old *BOY* sings that song…apparently it's on that movie Zookeeper??? And I'm totally *loving* the green and leopard…I'm pretty much a fan of leopard and ANYTHING (c: I would have to say I'm a fan of option #2 as well, and I'm about to have a cuteness heart attack with little girl's outfit! Seriously, my budget suffers horribly under the strain of little girl's clothes! ha!

  • I vote for the denim. We did a similar combo last fall for family pictures and it photographed beautifully! Sending a sample to your e-mail if you want to check it out. Those boots are too cute and looove the leopard sweater. Wonder if they still have that one?

  • Love both options a lot, but I give a slight edge to option #2…Not too matchy-matchy, but coordinates together beautifully. That little girl of yours is going to look like a doll!

  • I say jeans for the hubby…before I even read you sentence after the pic I thought the tan cords looked too matchy:) and I mean that in a loving way! You asked and I decided to give you my opinion!! Lol all the outfits are cute though!

  • I love option #1 more because blue jeans are really almost considered a neutralizer and given that you will be in the backyard the outfits will be even more matchy matchy in that setting so I say go with option 1..love the outfits.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE your outfit! The green and leopard are GENIUS!! I would pick option numero uno (as much as I like matchy-matchy option 2 looks too contrived) one is coordinating without trying too hard….

Have you ever checked out the Pleated Poppy's What I Wore Wednesday? It's al bloggers and their outfit combos – SO FUN!!
