Bringing the Family in the Family Room

I call it a family room.  I know lots of people call it a living room, but I call the “big room” that’s right in the center of our house the family room.  Anyhow, I made a little change in this room.  I decided to bring in the family.  Say what?  Let me try to make more sense.  I’ve had old black and white photos on the brain ever since I wrote this post.  I happen to have quite a few old family photos, and I really wanted to find a way to display them.  So, I moved my son’s artwork to the guest room (where it fits in perfectly) and created a place to hang some of my favorite old family photos.

I like that I’ll be able to change them so easily.  This way I can rotate through my collection and give all of our old photos a chance to shine.  I think it would be fun to gather some childhood pics of the hub and display them around his birthday!  I love how simple this looks.  It brings in such a warm, casual vibe.

I just taped the twine to the back of the open frame and that seems to be holding up just fine.  If I need to I can staple the twine to the back but so far the tape seems to be getting the job done.   This display is right next to the opening to our kitchen, and I just love passing by and seeing these on my way.

These are a few of my favorites.

My Purple Heart awarded Marine dad in Vietnam.

That is my mom in the middle and my aunt on the side.  Look at how sweet their faces are – and check the date on the side.

My father in law as a boy.  Don’t worry, he grew in to those ears.  ðŸ˜‰

And last – my favorite old photo – this one is of my grandmother.  She was so beautiful!  I’m in one with the sleeves on that dress!  She was the strongest woman I’ve ever known.  She left her home in Japan and married my grandfather in a time when this country was not very tolerant.  I learned a lot from her (like how to play Pac-Man – my grandparents owned an arcade for my most of my childhood), and I miss her very much.

Do you have a collection of old family photos?  How do you display them?

  • That is such a wonderful idea Carmel! I have quite a few old family photos too and I might have to copy this one. Your grandmother was so beautiful…definitely runs in the family! 😉

  • Oh I adore this idea! I love looking at photos in general, but especially old photos. What a wonderful way to honor family members and be able to reflect on your memories of them each time you walk past the display.

  • I love this idea – looking through old pictures brings up so many wonderful memories. I have an old wooden tray that was carved by my "Uncle-in-law" (who has since passed away) for my wedding day (don't have the husband either – LOL) but I put all the odds and ends photos that seem to collect. Not only is it wonderful for me to look at, friends who come over love to go through them and see my boys when they were babies and old family and friends. I think I will have to try the frame idea too. Put the special ones up 🙂

  • What a great way to display old photos that are special to you! Don't you just love being able to look at them and see them everyday? I never get tired of my photo walls, and especially love old family photos.

Your grandmother was indeed beautiful and how cute are your mom and her sister? Beautiful and meaningful.

  • That is beautiful! A couple years ago I made three large canvases covered in b&w family photos and covered in mod podge (didn't use the original photos- made copies.) I really love this look though! and perfect for a family room.

  • This one actually brought tears to my eyes, Carmel. My maternal grandmother (to whom I was very close) and both of my parents are gone now and I have SO many old photos stored in boxes. You have inspired me to get them out and finally sort through them all to display my favorites. And Jennifer is correct: you DO look a lot like your grandmother. She was so beautiful. 🙂

  • I have so many old b&W pics and every time I visit my parents I try to make copies of more. Hopefully I will display them soon – I am thinking in my newly painted/stenciled dining room. I love this idea where you can enjoy so many and change them around.
