{DIY} Rub ‘n Buff Greek Key Tray

I busted out the rub ‘n buff over the weekend.  I’m addicted to that stuff!  I promise to write up a little “how to use rub ‘n buff post” in the next day or so (since so many of you have asked for specifics).  But today is Monday and I’m feeling too lazy for specifics; so instead I’ll just show you what I rubbed ‘n buffed (that didn’t come out right did it?).

I decided to bling out my plain white coffee table tray.  I’ve had this tray for years.  It used to be black until I painted it white a year ago.

Then this weekend I felt like getting a little crafty………and messy.

I pulled out the Greek key stencil (athena allover) the peeps at Cutting Edge Stencils were nice enough to give to me.  I cut out one section to use on the inside of the tray.
Then I laid the stencil down and used rub ‘n buff in gold leaf.  I did the sides first then the middle.

I also rubbed ‘n buffed some corner braces to add on to each of the outside corners.
Then I attached the corner braces and added 2 coats of polycrylic to protect and seal the stenciled pattern.
I love this Greek key stencil, and it took no time at all to do this little project!
I decided not to rub ‘n buff the silver screws because I like the look of the mixed metals.  I also only used 2 screws instead of 4 per bracket – just because I liked the way it looked.

It’s not really a noticeable change when you walk into the room………………

but I’ve always loved little details.

What did you do this weekend?  Did anyone else decide to get their craft on?

when i'm almost done i wonder, is it enough?
then i remember you, my sweet rub n buff,
and you add just the perfect touch.

    LOVE. the end.

  • It looks great! Not sure if you are going to cover this in your post, but can you use Rub 'n Buff on door knobs and bathroom fixtures? I wasn't sure if it would stand up to that kind of wear.

  • LOVE this! and seriously why can't you live near me! I would so love to get my craft on with you!! b/c anything with greek key and gold makes me giddy!

  • Totally love the tray all blinged out! And the L-brackets – what a great idea for a little added detail.
I have been thinking about having a Rub n Buff party one summer day – what do you think? There are just so many applications and it would be great to have all these ideas in one place!

  • I LOVE this! Some of my bigger home projects are getting closer to being finished and I'm looking forward to focusing on the details in various rooms of my house; can't wait to try some rubb n buff one day!

  • This little makeover looks great…everything looks better with a little gold! My problem with rub n buff (besides my hubs making inappropriate fun of me everytime I say it), is that it NEVER comes off my fingers and I can't stand the smell. But, I love the results, so I use it anyways. Do you have a trick for getting it off your hands?

  • Looks really cool! I just hate the fact that stencilling hasn't really found its way to Germany – all the stencils here are so lame =)

  • Thank you so much for using Rub 'n Buff! I'm going to post this to our Facebook page and link to your blog.
