Pinterest Inspired Black Doors

Remember back in January when my patio doors were replaced with sliding doors and I talked about how I wasn’t sure whether I should paint them black or white?  Yes, I just said, “back in January.”  Don’t judge – I’m slow and I get side-tracked pretty easily.  Anyhow, guess what?!  Thanks to the ol’ Pinterest Challenge that Katie, Sherry, Kate and Michelle issued I finally painted them.

Truth be told, and Andrea can attest to this, I had already taped and primed them long before they issued the challenge, but I still hadn’t painted them until this past weekend.  I think I was a little nervous about going black even though that is what I really wanted to do deep down in my design-obsessed heart.  White just seems safer, but when they issued the challenge last week I think that was just the push I needed to finally finish this project……… and just paint them black already……… and stop going back and forth…….. and staring at them all taped and primed……….. and doing nothing about it…….. and second guessing myself…………. and just do it already!

Via Pinterest, I found this inspiring picture of black glass paneled doors in a guest bedroom featured at Traditional Home.

So this past weekend, I got busy with my foam roller and Purdy paint brush (that I got at Haven).

No I didn’t consume 2 bottles of wine……while I was painting.  ðŸ˜‰
It took 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint.  I used SW All Surface Enamel Latex paint in a black satin finish.  The hardest part of the painting process was having to take the sliding doors off in order to paint the side of the stationary door.  Thankfully the hubs was around to do that part because those doors are heavy – and I don’t mean a little.  All in all I am so glad I finally crossed this off my to-do list (that I made back in February – better late than never right?).  I can’t believe I waited this long!
Here’s how the room looked with the old doors (that needed to be replaced because they were rotting).
Here’s how it looked with the new unfinished sliding doors. (day of install)
Here’s how it looks now.

The black doors add some drama to the room.  I think they make the fireplace stand out even more.  That whole wall has really become more of a focal point in this room.

Does it take you a long time to make decisions and get things done in your home?  Now that I’m done I can hardly believe I ever questioned whether I should paint them black.  I love them like this so much!  I know black doors aren’t for everyone, but it feels really good to do what you love in your own home……to follow your own instincts………..to go with your first choice no matter what anyone else might think…………to decorate your home with a no-fear-no-rules design attitude……because at the end of the day it’s just that, your home.
Thanks for issuing the challenge girls!
You lit the fire I needed!

I would be so scared to go as bold as black – but wow.

I love how in the pictures the sun washes out the majority of doors while they're white/unfinished, but you can see every detail once they're black.

    awesome!

I love the scarf on the horse, too. so fun!

  • Love the difference. I keep looking through pictures of black doors saying, I'm gonna do it, then I back down because I don't know if I'll like it. I guess it's only paint and I can change it back right?

  • That turned out so beautiful! I have been obsessing over black doors lately! I need to just rip off the old badaid and give it a shot in my home. I am a total "think about a project too long and procrastinate forever" kind of girl too!

  • Ok Carmel, those just totally MAKE the room! I mean, seriously, they look so awesome! It completely changes things and makes the room look much bigger and more multi-dimensional. I'm sure that is a cool "DIY" word right? LOL!
    Well done girl!

  • Fabulous – they look like NYC vintage building iron windows! They really make a dramatic statement! My neighbor just did the same thing in her kitchen and I LOVE the look. Hmmm, maybe I need me some black windows/doors?

  • Boom!! Get it girl! That's is awesome. Looks great. Where did that sweet striped blanket over your pier one chair come from?

  • Do I spy changes to the painted cabinet next to the doors?? Wine types written onto it maybe? That is nice. Maybe a refection on your recent trip??

  • When we built our Craftsman bungalow, I went round and round in my head about painting the inner window frames black. It was done a lot in old houses, and we were trying incorporate details in our new house that one would have found back in the 1920s when bungalows were prominent. I sissied out. Of course, that was long before Pinterest and even before I found design blogs.

Good on you for taking the leap to go for black doors. I agree — they make that wall really pop, and they really class up the room. Gorgeous!

  • Wow…talk about the drama! Those black doors seriously make the room! and I thought it looked great before! And yes, the fireplace really stands out! Great job!

  • I love the look! I also love the white cusions on your Pier 1 chair. I have the same one and have been DYING to find something just like that, rather than the outdoor cushion from the store I'm currently living with. Could you please share where you got yours? Thanks!

  • I am also here from YHL and I think the black looks fantastic! In fact I love the entire room and I'm gonna go look at more pics of your house cause I love your style 🙂 I especially love the horse head on the fireplace and I was wondering where you got it?

  • This is a cool and nice post ever.I was looking at some of your posts on this website and I conceive this web site is really instructive.

  • The doors are wood on the inside and are wrapped with a weather resistant material on the outside. I used an acrylic paint that was recommended for painting doors and cabinets and it's held up really great!

  • Hi Carmel! I can't believe I've never visited your blog! I love it! Saw it for the first time yesterday, fell in love with the black front door, came home and told David we needed to do it. Well, luckily he was recently laid off because I came home from lunch today and guess what he was doing…….painting the front door black! It is looking awesome. I'll send you a pic when we're finished. Thanks for the awesome idea. I'll be back for more! Dawn Stewart (now in Atlanta, GA)
