Decorating with Legos

Last week I watched Toy Story 3 with my kids.  I’ve seen it probably 100 times now, and I still cry. every. time.  It’s just one of those movies that makes me want to stop time.  My little girl is almost 7 and my son just turned 9.  I’m realizing every day just how fleeting this thing called childhood really is.  The idea that one day their toys, that are currently all over my house, will no longer be played with makes me sad.

Most days when I walk in to my son’s room, there are legos all over the floor.

They drive me bonkers some times, but I know the day when he no longer wants to play with these teeny, tiny lego bricks is fast approaching.  Of all of his toys I think the legos will be the hardest for me to part with as they just bring so many great memories to mind.  I’ve started thinking of ways to use his legos when he outgrows wanting to spend hours building with them.  A few months ago, he and I made this lego lamp for his desk using a bunch of spare bricks.

It was really simple.  We just used the end of a paint brush to apply glue to each brick and covered the base of the lamp.

It’s a special addition to his desk area and one that I don’t think he’ll outgrow.  I could totally see this lamp in his teenage room someday.

As I started doing some “what to with legos after your kids are done playing with them” research I was surprised to find lots of really great ideas.  Instead of just packing them up for someday grandchildren to play with or donating them to your local Goodwill, there are lots of great ways to continue using them.  Not that I’m in any hurry for my son to outgrow wanting to play with legos, but it’s comforting to know that when that day comes it won’t be so heartbreaking.

While those are robots pictured above I could totally see a lego figure under one of those cloches.  Either one or a grouping would look great on a dresser or bookshelf.

This is a simple diy project using lego bricks to make a pencil cup for a desk.  You could always spray paint the lego bricks or only use bricks in a certain color if you want a more cohesive look.

This was a door sign made for a lego birthday party, but I think something like this would work well as wall art.

My son saw this next picture and said he wants this when he’s all grown up and has his own house.

It took 22,742 lego bricks to build this table!  I’m kind of in love with it!

Last but not least, while this isn’t a lego decorating idea, I absolutely adore these lego cuff links!

Does Toy Story 3 get you all weepy too?  Have you given any thought to what you’ll do with your kids toys when they  – tear – grow up – tear?  I know I can’t keep everything but somethings are hard to let go of aren’t they?

  • Yes, TS3 makes me weepy. My oldest is about to turn 14 and heading to high school, so we've already hit the age where we've phased out a lot of toys. My son is sentimental and resists getting rid of anything, and I honestly think it is because his favorite movies when he was 2-5 were TS1 and TS2! It is a crazy balancing act keeping the truly meaningful things and forcing the purge of the random. We have kept a bin of his Thomas trains for that someday when he's got kids of his own. Thomas was his longest lasting toy obsession.

  • I have a son who is now 27 and he would want that Lego table as well 🙂

You just never know when that "last time" will be-the last Lego building session, the last time they page through a fave book…the good thing is they replace kid play with adult play-in our case, painting and guitar and design. It's all good.

I saved all the things I knitted/sewed, and we saved heaps of legos, playmobil, and the brio trains. A box of best loved books is in the basement as well. While I loved them as kids, having twin adult children is so much easier, LOL.

  • My mom saved my siblings and my legos and they are MOST DEFINITELY a fave with the next generation! The grandkids can't get enough of this "vintage" collection of legos! Although it's a long way away, think about how awesome it will be when you pull out "dad's" old legos for your grandkids 🙂

  • Hey girlie. 🙂 I'm really thinking my son will never outgrow Legos……he's 12 and still plays with them daily! He says (in all seriousness) that he wants to be a Lego engineer when he grow up….designing new sets for the Lego company.
