Even though we’ve lived in this house for almost 4 years now, I’ve never not. one. time. ever decorated our basement for Christmas. Honestly I’ve never really decorated our basement period – until this past year. This year I spruced up the kids art center and game center, mapped out a little corner just for me, updated an old piece of furniture, figured out how to deal with the ugly electrical box and last but not least gave our basement fireplace a little chalkboard brick makeover.
And the best part of all of those little projects is that together they make the basement feel a lot more warm and cozy. So much so that we’ve been spending a lot more time down there as a family, especially in the evenings. So this Christmas it only seemed right that I deck the halls of the basement too.
I started with the mantel.
The chalkboard bricks make for a great whimsical backdrop.
For this mantel I wanted something super simple. Working around the mirrors and blue vases that were already there I hung some garland, strung some lights and dusted off the ol’ Christmas village. I erased the “hello” that is usually there and added in the “joy”. Oh and I added a little deer I found at HomeGoods a few years ago. She looks so pretty at night all lit up with Christmas lights.
This makes family snuggle time while watching a Christmas movie that much more enjoyable. What is it about Christmas lights that just makes you feel happy?! I’m kind of kicking myself for waiting so many years to start sprucing up our basement. It’s turning into a great little family cave, and I kind of love the more relaxed fun vibe of the whole space.
Take a look at our living room mantel and check out the features from last week’s mantel party before you go.
Have a great Monday friends!
I love it, and the chalkboard bricks are fantastic! I'm finding chalkboard stuff just creeping in everywhere in my home lately – I'm even making a chalkboard gallery wall of Christmas cards – I think I need a 12 Step Program.
