I’m a big fan of lanterns. Besides the fact that they’re beautiful, I find that they provide endless decor possibilities. They’re obviously great for candles; but so often they can double as vases and planters, they can corral kitchen utensils, or hold craft supplies.
I fell head over heels in love with this one and decided to use it as a terrarium.
This lantern terrarium makes for a a simple and chic table centerpiece. This one in particular was super easy to throw together and basically required zero effort. I grabbed three small plants – a mini-orchid from Trader Joe’s and two little ferns from a local flower shop.
The orchid was already in a pot, so I grabbed two votive holders for the ferns. Potting them instead of exposing the root ball and planting them in layers of moss (as you do with a traditional terrarium) makes them easy to remove………you know in case I happen to forget to water and they die. With the plants in pots they’ll be a lot easier to replace. I filled the bottom of the votives with little pebbles for drainage.
All I did next was place them in the lantern and fill in any holes with moss and stones.
Like I said, super easy.
I love that I could easily hang this lantern terrarium, but mine is currently sitting on my trunk-turned-coffee-table out on our screened porch.
With lanterns being so versatile I never feel bad when one happens to jump in my shopping cart. 😉 Here are a few of my current lantern loves.
