one centerpiece – four ways

I love having a centerpiece on my breakfast room table year round.  This table is where life happens in our house.  We eat, craft, do homework, play games and just generally gather around this table every. single. day.  It’s really nice to have something pretty to look at in the center of the table.  I believe wholeheartedly in bringing in fresh flowers or clippings from the yard to freshen and add life to your home.  However sometimes life gets really busy and there’s no time to tend to replacing fresh floral arrangements, which is why I’ve become fast friends with house plants.

Even if I don’t have a green thumb, house plants still last longer than a fresh bunch of flowers and over the long haul they cost a whole lot less too!  Back in the fall I made a planter box to use as a centerpiece  for my breakfast room table, and it has easily become one of my most favorite diy projects I’ve ever made.  It’s easy to change with the seasons for a fresh look yet requires practically zero attention.  That’s a win win in my book.

As you can see my idea of a winning combination is _________ + succulents = beautiful.  Of course, that could also be due to the fact that succulents are the house plant bff of anyone who tends to forget to water.  ðŸ˜‰   While I may prefer the ease of the not-too-high-maintenace succulent, any plant will grow (as long as you remember to water) in this planter box centerpiece.

I could also empty the plants and dirt entirely and fill this box with water for fresh flowers.  This centerpiece provides so many options!

  • Thanks! The really great thing about using the itso bins from Target to make this planter is that they're really deep, so even though there are no drainage holes you can have multiple layers of soil for good drainage. If you make one I'd love to see it – feel free to post to the blog Facebook page or send me an email!

  • I love this, Carmel! I'm all about finding simple ways to switch thing up seasonally lately and this is perfect. Totally agree ____ + succulents = beautiful 🙂
