Soup Can Centerpiece and Mismatched Table Setting

Soup season is upon us!  Everybody raise your praise hands!  Truth be told, I enjoy soup year round, but there is something especially wonderful about soup in the fall and winter months.  Am I right?!  If you’ve never tried my tomato basil chicken soup, you need to get on that pronto.   It’s seriously so good and so easy; plus it’s both dairy and gluten free.  Anyhow, I mention that recipe, and soup season in general, because today’s “project”, if you can call it that, involves recycling cans.  You’ve surely seen this done a time or two since the invention of Pinterest.  It’s certainly not a new idea.  But it sure is a fun one, and there are so many ways to get your creativity on here!  It’s a great little idea to have up your sleeve as we head into the season of large gatherings and entertaining.

Mixing and Matching

This is such a fun way to play with pattern, color and texture.  If you’ve ever been pattern shy in your home, this is your opportunity to throw caution to the wind and get your pattern mixing creativity going.  There’s no commitment here in making these sweet, little soup can vases, so you don’t have to worry about getting it wrong.  Leopard and plaid mixed with a textural crochet….why not?!

I chose the crochet because it reminded me of a spider web, and I wanted to put together a not-so-scary Halloween tablescape.

Inspired by the mismatched centerpiece vases, I carried that theme through and mismatched the place settings.  There is some continuity here as there are matching place setting pairs.

I think the key in pulling off a mismatched table setting is in having at least one element of uniformity.  Here, it’s the white dinner plate.

Well, what do you think?  Are you going to start pulling all of the cans from your recycling bin?  Would you set a mismatched table?  Or do you prefer all matching sets?  Mismatching makes room for thrifted treasures which is one of the main reasons I love mixing and matching a table setting!
