Elevating the Everyday

Last week my daughter and I baked together twice.  (We made these gluten free oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.)  I like putting homemade treats in my kiddos school lunches, and my daughter loves to bake.  So on my end it’s really only a matter of having the ingredients on hand as she does most of the work.

As we were pulling out the ingredients, measuring cups and mixing bowls she said, “There’s something about baking that just feels so fancy.”

Isn’t it funny how working with “pretties” makes the experience feel a little more special?

I like decorating my home.  You all already know that.  But I also love to incorporate beauty in everyday tasks.  I think I got this from my mamma.  Long before Pinterest made coffee stations famous, she used a beautiful crystal sugar bowl and pretty silver spoons to make her morning cup of joe.

I learned by watching her that making everyday moments feel special really doesn’t take that much.  It could mean waking up a little earlier than usual to start your day with a little french press action.

It’s adding fresh flowers to your grocery list.

Or clipping herbs from your garden and throwing them in water to keep by the stove.

It could simply be recycling a pretty polka-dotted wine bottle to use as an olive oil cruet.

There is just something about these everyday moments where form and function meet in such a beautiful way that makes even the simple task of frying eggs feel fancy.  And maybe it’s silly, but that fancy feeling has a way of seeping into your attitude.  Fancy makes you feel more patient, more cheery, more apt to smile.  Just me?

And the thing is, it isn’t about expensive things.  Nope.  Fancy does not have to cost a lot of money.  Fancy can come from a thrift store, like my favorite blush pink tea kettle.

And fancy can even be an old, handmade pot holder.

The way I see it, if elevating the everyday wasn’t worthwhile, God wouldn’t have bothered to create flowers.

  • Fresh flowers at home and having a manicure are my two things that make everyday feel fancy. Oh! And a yummy scented candle!

  • When my three daughters were young, I would brew a pot of tea and serve it to them in some teacups and saucers I found at an old shop. Mismatched, but beautiful. And of course, sugar cubes. With sugar tongs!

  • What a wonderful post, and I wholeheartedly agree! Fancy just makes what you are doing more special! I love using my Anthropology measuring cups when I bake! Are they practical—no, but that is what I love about them. Like you said, why would God bother with flowers if not to elevate and bring joy and beauty!!
    Have a wonderful week.
P.S. Cannot wait for updates on your new house…

  • Cloth napkins! We have been using them for years now and my family expects them- we have three boys, mind you. Sometimes I fold them into fancy shapes if we are having something really nice for dinner. Something about a beautifully set table elevates even the most humble of meals.

  • Thanks Dawn! Lots going on behind the scenes for house number seven….nothing fun, just lots and lots of paperwork and permits and blah, blah…but the design fun will begin soon! And I can’t wait to share the process with you all!

  • Oh my word – totally agree! I’m not as good about using cloth napkins all the time. I have a penchant for cute printed paper ones, but I know the real deal is better for the environment. Thanks for the reminder to bust out the cloth more often!

  • Thanks Carmel for reminding us that it only takes a bit of fancy to change our mood & perception of it. I have always used cloth napkins, individual salt shakers, flowers & China for my meals. It was something I brought my children up with to feel special even if I was only serving hot dogs & baked beans. We were an average family but we were special in our own way.

  • I love this post so much! It is so easy to get caught up in all the “chores” of life and lose sight of ways you can make ordinary days feel special! I did a Bible study for women a couple years ago that was about “celebrating lavishly” and how it breathes life into our ordinary days. Thank you for the reminder! My mom also puts a fancy twist on things and I’ve always loved it. I like to make our guest room feel special when we have guests with fresh flowers, a coffee bar, and “midnight” snacks.

  • Back in the 80’s and 90’s, there was an author named Alexandra Stoddard who wrote about living each day beautifully. I couldn’t get enough of her books and suggestions and was lucky enough to have nice conversations with her on a few occasions. Advice from her book, Living a Beautiful Life, is timeless. You are on the right track.

  • Hi there,

Just found your blog last week.

I have a question. All of your pictures have a decidedly yellowish cast. Why I’m wondering about this is I’ve been thinking about buying an expensive camera because my pics aren’t nearly as good as other blogs, meaning, they’re not light and bright.

So when I saw your pictures, I began to wonder if maybe my pics ARE ok they way they are. (DIY and decorating are not my main focus anyway.) Do you use a professional camera?

Anyway, thanks for any insight you can give me.

    Rebecca

  • I use a Canon 6D. Most of my photos are shot during the time when the warmest light of the day is coming in to whatever space I’m shooting because I like that “yellowish cast” that you’re talking about. I prefer a warm aesthetic.
