Looking For a Really Great Sleeper Sofa – Help!

While I have thoroughly enjoyed decorating the guest bedroom in our sixth house, the reality is even as often as we host out of town guests, this room sits empty the majority of the time.  So when crafting plans for our seventh house we decided to combine my husband’s office space with our guest room.  We just don’t want any space in our new home to be unused.  Plus we’re in that phase of life where we’re not too far away from being empty nesters and both of our kids will have their own rooms in the new house, so eventually we’ll have two extra bedrooms.  All of this to say, we’re in the market for a sleeper sofa.

The queen bed that is currently in our guest room will be going into my daughter’s room.  And we’re on the hunt for a really great sleeper sofa for my husband’s office that will multi-task as our guest bedroom.

But I need your help!  We’ve never had or shopped for a sleeper sofa before!  And I want to be sure to get something that will be really nice and comfortable.  When family and friends come to stay they are usually with us for at least a week, so it’s super important to me that they sleep comfortably.

  • I don’t know about a sleeper sofa but my in laws have the blow up mattress from front gate. It is so nice. You just plug it in and it blows up and has legs that pop out in a few minutes. Def not as comfy as an actual mattress but neither is any sleeper sofa I’ve tried…Just a thought!

  • What about a Murphy bed instead? I think it’ll be way more comfortable than a sofa.

  • I have never found a really comfortable sleeper sofa. Have you considered a murphy bed or an aerobed instead?

  • Comfort Sleeper by American Leather. We sleep on one at a friend’s home who has the same setup you’re planning. You would never know it is a sofa bed. They have fabrics too. Pricey—because you get what you pay for!

  • I think whatever you get, plan on purchasing a foam topper for the bed. Brook from Nesting With Grace has a couch from Wayfair. We have a single bed with a trundle but found that most of the time, we needed both beds anyway, so I’m converting it to 2 twin beds. Since this seating isn’t your main seating, I would look for a cheap sofa. Ikea has one that unfolds but for 2 people, the inside person would have to crawl over the other. Excited to see what you end up with.

  • Hi Carmen! We have a combined office/guest room. Our parents come and stay all summer. This is the daybed we use and love:

We use an oversized twin mattress up top, and a regular twin on the trundle. It looks like a sofa (if you squint just right) but functions as a comfortable twin bed.

The only downside is that the back support has a black felt backing. So we don’t place it in front of a window. We have it against a wall.

    Hope this helps!

  • i researched this extensively and apparently the most comfortable sofa sleepers on the market are the comfort sleeper by american leather

  • American Leather has sofas with a tempur pedic mattress- heard from a client they are comfortable

  • Make sure it has the Sealy mattress. I slept on a pullout with a Sealy for several nights and it did not feel like punishment at all. Fantastic night’s sleep!

  • I’m not sure you have this store in SC but in Charlotte NC we have a Stickley Audi. They have several sleeper sofas designed with no bar under the pull out mattress. I was shopping for a traditional bed but we spent a good 20 minutes checking out the sleeper sofas bcz they were so comfortable both as a sofa and a bed. Good luck with your search.

  • We special ordered a queen sleeper sofa from Bassett Furniture (of all places!). It has a memory foam mattress. So far, I’ve received no complaints from our beach house guests.

  • We had a Murphy bed in our last house for a guest area. That way you can have a super comfy mattress. It has bookshelves on each side and that added so much storage. Sleeper sofas just aren’t that comfy in general. We’ve had both and or guests liked the Murphy bed best

  • I considered a murphy bed at first but I don’t want to be tied to making this space a guest room. At least with a sleeper sofa it won’t look like a bedroom when the bed isn’t pulled out. In a few years with kids in college we can use their rooms as guest rooms.

  • Thanks for sharing that Lisa. I don’t know if we have that store, but Charlotte is only a three hour drive.

  • Some others have mentioned this brand to me. Did not know they used tempur pedic mattresses. Definately going to check them out! Thanks!

  • Sleepersinseattle.com has fabulous service, even from thousands of miles away. I chatted on the phone with a rep and she emailed me back with manufacturers specs of products not even listed online, but that fit all of my preferences. Worth a look, I was crazy impressed.

  • Check out Pottery Barn’s PB Comfort Deluxe Sleeper sofa. Comes with a memory foam mattress and no uncomfortable bars under your back!!

  • I’m late to the conversation but HIGHLY recommend the Crate and Barrel Reston sofa. It’s not a traditional fold out sleeper sofa but instead is a trundle. The bottom slips forward and up to form a Queen bed so no uncomfortable bars underneath. We have ours at the cottage and use it for Netflix movie nights – everyone loves being able to stretch out! Definitely the most comfortable sofa I have ever owned.

  • Thanks for sharing Jen! Wish we had a local Crate & Barrel store! I’ll have to go on a field trip. 😉
