A Light Compromise

As you may know we are currently working on re-decorating our dining room.  Check here to read about all the changes we’ve made so far.  In our quest to make it “less formal so that we would use it more often” we decided to change the dining room chandelier.

We felt like the existing brass chandy just didn’t fit in with our design plans.  Since we didn’t break the bank making any of our other dining room changes, we decided that spending a little money would be ok.  Of course, we didn’t exactly see eye to eye on what to purchase to replace it.  I wanted something like this crystal one at Lowe’s.

The hubs thought it was too feminine.  He wanted something like this chrome chandy from Amazon.com.

But it wasn’t working for me, and I wasn’t loving that price at $467.  We thought about this drum shade we also found at Lowe’s.
Did you check that price?!  At $99, I thought that was a steal!  Once again the hubs wasn’t loving this.  He said while he wanted something more updated than the brass chandy; he didn’t think it was fair for the kitchen to have a dressier fixture.  We have the Celeste chandy from Pottery Barn hanging over our kitchen table (which is on special right now!).
Take a look here to see it in our kitchen.  While I did like the drum shade at Lowe’s; I eventually came around to the hubs thinking and felt like maybe it wouldn’t be so great for the kitchen to outdo the dining room.  I mean I didn’t want to be the cause of any jealous dining room issues.  With that settled, we decided on this one.
It’s from The Home Depot.  It was just over $200, but the great thing was I had a gift card for $70!  YAY!  We both love it!  It’s masculine and contemporary enough for the hubs and totally works for me too!  It’s on a dimmer so at night it really looks like pillar candles- so romantic.  The romance aspect is why I had originally wanted a crystal chandy (they look so romantic to me).  The soft glow that this light gives to the room totally sets the mood.  Love it!  Once again, a little compromise can be a really good thing.
Have you made any decor compromises lately?  Or are we the only couple that rarely sees eye to eye?  Please tell me I’m not alone!
