I Heart Tinsel

I do.  I love tinsel.  I love tinsel garland and tinsel wreaths.  I don’t know why, but it just makes me happy.  It looks like –  for lack of a more descriptive word – fun!  I love it most in gold and silver.  Who is shocked by this?  No one.

Last year, I bought some gold/silver tinsel garland at Target.  I used on my tree last year, but this year I wanted to use on my banister.

Yeah, ummm, that didn’t really go so well.  I didn’t have enough of it for one thing, but also it wasn’t really strong enough to hold ornaments.  Not to be defeated in my quest to deck the staircase in tinsel, I opted to make a wreath instead.  I had a wreath form in my craft closet just hoping for a chance to join in the Christmas fun, so I got to wrapping the garland around the wreath. But son of nutcracker (name that movie) I ran out of tinsel garland before the wreath was completely wrapped!

So, while I could have run out and bought some more tinsel (because Target is again carrying this exact same garland) I decided to roll with this unexpected twist.  I raided my craft closet and found a scrap of fabric and used it to finish the wreath.  I ended up with the weirdest – wonkiest (that is my new word) Christmas wreath that you’ve ever seen.

For some strange reason – I LOVE IT!  It has a chic, seussical quality to it.  Apparently I’m on a roll with this word-making-up-business today – seussical – meaning – to look like it came from a Dr. Seuss book.   Anyhow, weird and wonky just sort of work with my entry foyer, so I’m rolling with this look.

Before I wrapped the fabric, I snipped a small piece of tinsel from the wreath to use around some glass candles.

I love it when accidents looks like they were part of some masterful plan – HA!

So, that’s the story of how I made the craziest wreath you’ve ever seen.  It certainly doesn’t look like it came from a store does it?  Have you made any chic, seussical wreaths?  Anyone else in love with tinsel like I am?  I kind of want to make my daughter a tinsel skirt or at the very least wrap some tinsel around the top of some knee socks.  Yep – weird – it just works here.  😉

Hope you had a great weekend!  I finished my mantel, and I’ll be showing it to you tomorrow.  For now let’s just say that I’ve been hit by the weird Christmas stick this year.  I’m totally letting my freak flag fly high this year!  WOO -HOO!  It’s so much fun to just be you!

  • Let's just say if I had to pick out your wreath from a line-up it would not be difficult..this one is so you with that fabric (although I would not necessarily have guessed it with the tinsel). We went thru tinsel overdose when growing up in London and decorating the tree and then we had the artificial tinsel tree from Singapore before that for many years so you could say I am taking a break. But this is cute!
