Easy as 1, 2, 3…….I Hope

This is the reason my family needs a mudroom.

We come and go through our (basement integral) garage.  Our guests are welcomed in through our entry foyer,  but we are welcomed home through this tiny funnel of a hallway.  I did the best I could to make this little space work for us by creating a mudroom of sorts inside that hallway closet.

Unfortunately because this hallway is so narrow if the closet doors are open you can’t pass through, let alone open the garage door.  So to give you a full picture of the annoying scenario that happens daily around here – imagine that we’ve just pulled in to the garage from school, the kids get out of the car and go through the garage door to hang up their coats/backpacks, I follow just a few minutes behind and open the garage door to whack – the kids left the closet doors open – awesome.  There are numerous versions of this scenario, but you get the picture right?  Don’t even get me started on days when I have my hands full with bags and things.  I have no place to really drop things.  We desperately need a landing spot.  

So, despite the fact that I have a number of unfinished projects (ummmm……remember the February list – yeah, only part of one item on the list was fully completed) I have decided to make solving this problem my main priority.  Unorganized chaos makes me crazy, so here’s the plan – it’s a simple little 3 stepper!  (Insert sarcasm here.)

Sounds easy enough right?  Ha – yeah – don’t answer that.  I’m actually putting this plan in motion backwards – 3, 2, 1.  I’ve decided to tackle the bookcase first because that will help me to clean out the hallway closet as most of what is currently in their (besides the coats) will probably end up over there.  My vision for that piece looks something like this.
