Well, I survived. Barely! Demo is not my favorite part of a diy project. So here’s the story. (Now I have The Brady Bunch song in my head.)
One of the very first projects I completed in this house I did months before I started this blog. I never blogged about it because I didn’t have detailed pictures of the process, and I never took any real before pictures. Obviously, a lot has changed since I started blogging. (Now I take before pictures of everything.) Anyhow, at the bottom of our basement stairs is a built-in bookcase. It was white when we moved in.
I envisioned us doing lots of entertaining down there (where we keep the “big” TV), so I decided to turn this bookcase into a bar.
Just for fun, I covered the top with glass – as in broken wine bottles. I guess I was going for a mosaic look?
While the top wasn’t completely level this actually worked pretty well. The issue was keeping our glassware down here was somewhat of a pain. The sink and dishwasher are in the kitchen upstairs. There was lots of moving glasses up and down the stairs – not fun. In addition we rarely used this bar area. More often than not we would end up going down to the basement to grab a bottle or glass just to come up to the kitchen to pour a drink.
I realized something in the fall when my daughter started kindergarten. With both kids in school, what we really need is a mudroom! So what does this have to do with this bookcase turned wine bar? Well, in order to turn my “mudroom in a closet” into a real mudroom I need to do some rearranging of what we store in that closet. Long story short I’m going to turn the wine bar back into a bookshelf so that I can use it as an extension of the mudroom I plan to create out of our closet. I know I sound like a crazy person, but I promise when it’s all said and done it will make more sense. For now, let’s look at some inspiration!

Obviously, that’s not my happy face.
