The Mudroom Plan

Well, I survived.  Barely!  Demo is not my favorite part of a diy project.  So here’s the story.  (Now I have The Brady Bunch song in my head.)

One of the very first projects I completed in this house I did months before I started this blog.  I never blogged about it because I didn’t have detailed pictures of the process, and I never took any real before pictures.  Obviously, a lot has changed since I started blogging.  (Now I take before pictures of everything.)  Anyhow, at the bottom of our basement stairs is a built-in bookcase.  It was white when we moved in.

I envisioned us doing lots of entertaining down there (where we keep the “big” TV), so I decided to turn this bookcase into a bar.

Just for fun, I covered the top with glass – as in broken wine bottles.  I guess I was going for a mosaic look?

While the top wasn’t completely level this actually worked pretty well.  The issue was keeping our glassware down here was somewhat of a pain.  The sink and dishwasher are in the kitchen upstairs.  There was lots of moving glasses up and down the stairs – not fun.  In addition we rarely used this bar area.  More often than not we would end up going down to the basement to grab a bottle or glass just to come up to the kitchen to pour a drink.

I realized something in the fall when my daughter started kindergarten.  With both kids in school, what we really need is a mudroom!  So what does this have to do with this bookcase turned wine bar?  Well, in order to turn my “mudroom in a closet” into a real mudroom I need to do some rearranging of what we store in that closet.  Long story short I’m going to turn the wine bar back into a bookshelf so that I can use it as an extension of the mudroom I plan to create out of our closet.  I know I sound like a crazy person, but I promise when it’s all said and done it will make more sense.  For now, let’s look at some inspiration!

I have a long way to go.  Yesterday I spent most of the day doing this………

with this look on my face.

Obviously, that’s not my happy face.

Do you have a mudroom?  Am I the only person who re-does their own diy project?

Speaking of diy projects, I’m over at The 2 Seasons today talking about my kitchen cabinets.   Head on over to check it out!

  • That look on your face is priceless! Can't wait to see how it turns out. I normally end up paying someone to re-do my DIY projects. ha!

  • I liked the bar but if it didn't make sense for you, at least you can re use it for your mudroom. Can't wait to see what you do! Love the kitchen cabinets!

  • Oh this is a good project!! I think a mudroom will be a great use of that space. We used to have a bar in our basement – where our "big TV" was too – but as my kids get older I am feeling like I don't want to leave the liquor in a space they hang out with their friends…..even though I trust them, I don't need any truth or dare involving the booze, thankyouverymuch. I also hated carting the barwear back and forth to the dishwasher upstairs! So good choice and look forward to seeing your newest project unfold.

  • Haha–you definitely don't look "happy" BUT I am sure it will be worth it. I bet you have to be super careful in removing the countertops with the mirror so close. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

  • It's going to look great when you're done! I refinished a dresser last summer (my first ever DIY project) and it took me FOREVER, now that I'm moving the dresser to another room (we moved) I don't like it as much. It'll be a long while before I redo it though!

  • I understand how you can have a mudroom closet, because I have a laundry room closet. Not the best idea home builders ever had. I am definitely staying tuned to see how that large piece of furniture gets incorporated into the plan! Keep up the good work! Linda S. in NE

  • Our mudroom is on our hit list this year as well. I'm excited to see how this project turns out for you! The demo did no look fun.

  • Why not just cover the tile? 1/4" piece of plywood trimmed just shorter then the front edge. Put a curve in the front and side parts of the plywood and it will look like additional decoration to the front edge. Paint it and you're done.
