Mom’s Reading Nook- A.K.A. My New Favorite Corner of The House

I love to read.

I love to curl up with a good book, a hot cup of coffee (or glass of wine), and get lost in the pages.   As a mom, it’s hard to find the time.  Squeezing in a few minutes every day or every other day is the most I can do lately.  I decided to set up a little corner of my bedroom as my very own reading nook.

A quiet place……….. away from the chaos………… where I can steal a few minutes………….. to read and relax.

It was pretty simple.  I already had the chair in here (Arhaus) and the rest, besides the curtains I made, came from shopping the house.  I took the lamp from the hubs office.  I’m using a vintage picnic basket as a side table.  The horse picture is an old diy project.  The other frames and things were found in the storage closet in our basement.

It’s just a little collection of things I love.  I framed a cocktail napkin from our wedding (in case you were wondering what was in the frame at the top right).

I have all the essentials.

Now all I need is some peace and quiet.  ðŸ˜‰

Do you have a reading nook?  Where do you like to curl up and read?  And for the record, I’m not a “nook” or any kind of e-reader girl.  I like the feel of the pages in my hand.  I’m old school I guess – I did just start internet banking though.  ðŸ˜‰  Where do you stand on the e-reader subject?  My hub keeps trying to convert me.  I’m holding strong!

    I myself am now a ibook reader – I like both options, but I never thougth I would be the ereader type – until I realized reading on the subway on my cell phone Kindle app was easier than holding a book. Now I prefer my ipad but I use it mainly at home or on the bus… funny how your commute can chanage your ways 😉

  • Love the little corner you created for yourself! I just read wherever I happen to be at the moment – on the couch, at the kitchen table, in bed… haha.

    I was vehemently against e-readers when they first came out. I felt like they were killing the publishing industry yadda yadda yadda. My fiance insisted on getting me a kindle for Christmas one year (probably was sick of my book collection taking over our apartment). Can I just tell you, it was love at first read. Unlike an iPad or nook or newer kindle, the plain ol-fashioned kindle isn't backlit, so it's not like you're reading a screen at all.
    I have a cover on it that gives it more of the "book" feel. It's so easy to take everywhere with me. My three favorite features:
    -going on vacation is SO much lighter. No more two or three books weighing down my carryon. I can have hundreds of books loaded on my kindle!
    -I fall asleep reading ALL the time. the kindle saves my spot. I used to drop my books and not know what page I was on!
    -when you finish the book in a series you can IMMEDIATELY purchase and start reading the next book. Even if it's 2 am. 🙂

  • You had me at the horse picture!!! I love your new reading nook! I am inspired by the wall color too to try something darker than I usually go! I always read in my bed and it can not be on a tablet- I need a real book too!

  • Your nook looks so inviting! I love that you were able to shop your house for most everything. I am a big Kindle fan. I still read real books (am reading one right now), but I love the convenience of my Kindle.

  • I am a voracious reader. Typically I read on the couch while my husband watches TV. I was so against the e-readers because I love books. Not necessarily feeling the pages, but I love displaying books and reading them so many times they become worn and a little frayed…almost like a badge of honor. I'm in a book club and while sometimes I enjoy the books they read, I really was tired of having so many paperback copies of chic lit novels around my house. This totally simplified the clutter. And if there is a really great book that I want to have all of the time, I can go out and buy it. But, like a previous person said, I love being able to buy a book right in the comfort of my house and then buy a second book when I finish the first immediately. Love it!! It has definitely got me reading more than I was before.

  • It looks very cozy and very charming, Carmel. I think it's so important to have spaces just for us "women." I don't have to deal with the chaos of children at home (I do miss that) unless the "Grands" are visiting, so my reading spot (other than in my bed at night) is a nice comfy leather chair in my sitting room. Since this area of our home is usually nice & tidy, & decorated with some of my nicer things, it makes for a very pleasant place to relax and read.

  • I'm a die-hard real pages book fan too! What a terrific space for curling up with a book! I love how you added special touches that were meaningful to you, and the colors are beautiful. I'm a big reader as well, but don't really have a favorite spot. Anywhere that's soft and comfy will do!

  • I was the same way about real books vs. e-readers for a long while, but my mom got me a nook for my birthday and now I love it. What pushed me over the edge was that you can check out books from the library on the nook! I love it–it saves me money and time and when/if I find a book I really love I can go buy it for my shelves. I usually have a book book and a nook book going at the same time.

  • I love your reading nook! I have a comfy den where I like to curl up and read. I'm converting to using the Nook app on my iPad as soon as I get through my actual books. I'll always get first editions of some of my favorite authors but I love e-readers because you can carry so many books at a time. You never have to worry about running out or forgetting to bring them along (as long as you have your e-reader, that is).

  • pretty curtains. Please divulge resources for them and for pillows. I never see cool chevron pillows.

    I was anti e reader until recently. Now I'm a convert. I love the nook with Glow. I can read at night without waking anyone, it has a super long battery life. I like.it.alot.

  • Like you, I was opposed to e-Readers. That is, until I borrowed my daughter's. Then I was hooked! I have downloaded more free books than I could ever read! I will never give up print books, though, and will buy one if I can't get the Kindle edition for free or close to free. But especially as I've dealt with tendinitis in my shoulder and elbow, holding a Kindle with my good arm is much easier than trying to hold a book. Plus, the Kindle is easy to throw in my purse when I head off to an appointment; I found that a print book and my planner – even when they would fit in my purse – made it way too heavy. So yeah, I'm a convert.

  • Greetings from Richmond Kentucky!!!I just joined Blog Sisters yesterday and when I saw another Kentucky girl (transplanted, but KY just the same) I just had to visit. So funny we are a bit alike, my husband is from Kentucky but spent a large portion of his adult life in LA. When he returned, we met and married.

  • That is just perfect Carmel! I really love your drapes and pillows – all those deep colors are so soothing. I think your wall color is what I wanted for our media room- but our paint turned out crayola blue- NOT what I was going for! 🙂

It reminds me of a commercial running right now … I don't remember what for … but the mom finally has time to read a book and her teenage daughter tells her the end. lol Hopefully you've had time to enjoy the space!   • You did a great job shopping the house accessorizing and designing the gallery type wall. I love the deep blue and the Ikat curtains…well, they look like they are Ikat. It truly does look like a comfy place to curl up and read a book.
    I too am an old school girl. Love the feel of the pages. No nook or kindle fire for me.

  • Give up the ghost girl – get yourself a Kindle and let the books blow your mind! So many freebies out there, and great self pub authors who only do e-readers…but, you know how I feel about my books! Your reading nook looks great! I'm setting one up in my office soon…mama needs her space to get her read on! (oh, what color blue is that on your walls?) love it!

  • The paint color is Wrought Iron by Martha Stewart. It's a great navy – I really love it! I had it color matched in a Coronado brand paint that is sold here in Lexington through a local paint shop called Perspectives.

  • Gorgeous – love everything and could spend my whole day reading (I wish!! in that cozy little corner. The color is deep and fabulous – very library like! I'm a real book girl too – hopefully I won't be converted to the e-reader any time soon!

  • It turned out great! I needed one of those when my kids were little! Oh well, I have one now. ha. I love the feel of pages too; not sure I will ever change over. Someday, I want a library in my house!

  • As much as I love real (& old) books, the smell, the feel, physicality of turning the pages…the conveniences of an e-reader have won me over. Being able to: travel lightly and take anything I could possibly want to read with me; for reading while waiting (kids activities, appointments, etc); at night using my Ipad without additional lights messing with hubs sleep, still having access to borrowing from local libraries; not needing to find more storage for more books or part with them prematurely… so many fabulous reasons to convert. Yes I still have real books too, but those are usually more of the reference, life long faves or coffee table/design varieties. Fabulous nook…trying to figure out how to incorporate a similar space in our soon to be new master…so ideal!
