New (Light Blue) Front Door

You may remember me mentioning in this post here that we were in desperate need of a new front door.  The old door was rotting.  It held out just long enough for us to hit up a nice little front door sale at The Home Depot earlier this summer.

We went with an Anderson door, and we let the folks at Home Depot do the installing for us.  We used them back in the spring when we replaced our patio doors for sliding doors and were very happy with the whole process.  So when the time came to replace the front door, it was a no brainer for us.  Anyhow, the door didn’t come painted or with the grills/grids/whatever you call them on the glass.  We had to order the grill/grid things from another company.

Choosing a paint color was quite the process.  We had our painter friend do the painting for us and I’m pretty sure he thinks I’m crazy now.  I had him paint the door twice because the first color I chose – Valspar Breezeway  – was too greeny-blue.  I disliked it so much I never took a picture of it on the door.  I just want to forget I ever chose that color.  ðŸ˜‰   Anyhow, the color we ended up with is called Cincinnatian Hotel Lindner Blue also by Valspar.  It’s more of a grey blue and works much better with our shutters, Valspar Graphite.

I would have just had the door painted the same dark blue we had before but my hub wanted something lighter/greyer/different-er.  It’s good to let them think their opinion is important.  (I’m kidding!)
So anyhow, what I really like about this door is the glass front.  I went back and forth for awhile trying to decide if I wanted glass on the front door, and I’m really glad I decided to go for it.  It lets in so much light!
The wreath is hard to see in these pictures so here’s a close-up.  I didn’t make it.  I’m lazy like that.  I bought it at Target on sale, but I did wrap the wreath hanger (the one that I had taped before) with jute twine. (5 minutes!)
I like little details.
I love the texture.

now to figure out what to do about that dang brass doorbell intercom thingy.  An intercom?  Really?  Who needs a flipping intercom?  Ridonc!

Do you have trouble deciding on colors for your exterior?  I think it’s much harder to choose paint colors for outdoor areas than it is for indoor.  There are so many other factors that play into how they look.

  • Your new door is beautiful! Why not use rub n buff on the doorbell/intercom to either match the doorknob or the lanterns

  • ooh i love the new door!!! it looks awesome!!!
maybe you could build a little box with molding around it that flips open to cover the intercom? kristin from my uncommon slice of suburbia did that for her thermostat i remember.

  • Your new door looks beautiful! And I love the wreath & the added jute wrapped hanger! Such a great idea! Maybe you could spray paint the doorbell/intercom thingy?!

  • I love the new color. We're in the midst of trying to decide on a new door color, but our shutters are green and I'm not sure what the heck will match. Such a decision!

  • Did you tell the painter that you are a diy/design blogger and the whole-wide-world-of-blogging would see it? Maybe that would have toned down the painting it a second time:)

We painted ours 3 ties, first white, then red (yuck, so not right for me, it was all orange and day-glo), then finally black. I know, not too original, but I love it:)

  • Oh my gosh. My front door has had primer on it for uh, 2years. I am not kidding you. Why do we find this stuff so hard to do, or decide on. My home is similar in color to yours. The brick and trim. just not as humungous as yours. You have definitely given me a color to think about! I was thinking green or blue anyway. Think it will get done by this year ? Ha!

  • I love the color you chose for the door! Everything has come together well, and the curb appeal of your house is fantastic!

  • This door is beautiful too! Love the contrast with the shutters. I also LOVE the plants on either side. I was looking for something to do to our front door since our house is very flat. (You can see a pic here, if you're so inclined): http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cg2HvxJBbPk/UYkXU_ONjOI/AAAAAAAACvg/sOeC8TZCtO8/s1600/House+FB+Cover+Photo+cropped.jpg

We can't do shutters because of the way the bricks are arranged around the windows, so I'm trying to add a little depth.
