What’s On My Mind This Friday

1.  Shannon Loves Design ,one of my amazing blog sponsors, is helping me to streamline the ol’ blog. I’ve made a few little changes  — (like the tabs up above and I’m still working to get all those new pages filled with content to make things easier to find over here).  She’s so great to work with!  I highly recommend her!

2.  Are you a no-reply commenter?  If you’ve ever left me a comment  – especially a question and haven’t heard back from me – this could be why.  Here’s how you can change that so I can respond – click here.

3.   Some of my favorite bloggers participated in a patio style challenge issued by Home Depot.  Cassie’s patio reveal has me dreaming of warm summer days!

4.   Do you watch Game of Thrones?  Oh my – it is totally addicting!  I’m thinking of reading the books, but I’m not sure that my diy schedule has room for me to start such an intense series.  It’s kind of hard to paint and read at the same time.  ðŸ˜‰

5.  My dad flew in from California on Tuesday night.  He’ll be here for about 2 weeks.  I so enjoy our visits as I only get to see him maybe twice a year.  Last night during dinner he told me the story of how he celebrated his 21st birthday.  He was a marine serving in Vietnam.  I had never heard this story before and hadn’t realized that he had celebrated a birthday while he was there.  At one point during his story tears started rolling down his face.  I can’t even imagine celebrating my 21st birthday, or any birthday for that matter, while in the middle of a war.

After hearing my dad’s story – I now understand why he made such a big deal about my 21st birthday.  He thinks I had my first tequila shot that day (let’s let him continue to think that).  He took all my girlfriends out to dinner.  We had such a great time, and he was so happy that day – I’ll never forget it  – and now that day is even more special because I know how he celebrated his 21st.

Call someone you love this weekend and find out something you don’t already know about them!

See you on Monday!  Have a great one!

  • Great post! It sounds like you and your dad have a great relationship. It was only later in my father's life, after my mom passed away, that he told us all of his war stories and being stationed in Japan. He was only 17 and got his high school diploma right on the ship…top in his class! My mom was such a talker, I don't think my dad ever got a word in! lol. I miss him now that he's been gone two years. Savor these times.

  • I'm so obsessed with Game of Thrones! I tried to read the books, but it's hard to read book one when the show is on book 3. I was a bit confused. The books are good, but a little different. I'm just going to stick with the show for now!

  • We are watching GOT and O.M.G. My husband has read the books, but I haven't. I have read a lot of the Wiki'd information so I am totally spoiled and let me tell you–what is coming up this season is CRAZY. And that is saying a lot for this show!

  • Hooray Game of Thrones! I didn't have time to sit down and read the books, so I started the audiobook version on Audible and was immediately hooked – it's a perfect solution for someone who wants to read and multitask, I think! Even better that the narrator for those books is amazing =)

  • I don't get to see my parents but about twice a year as well and I love it when we can get together. Enjoy your dad! I liked reading about his 21st birthday, it brought back memories of how I felt and spent my 21st as well. I will probably make a big deal out of my kids 21st as well!

  • Aww that is such a great story about your dad and how it made you realize why he made such a big deal of your birthday. So sweet. My mother is starting to repeat stories a LOT…..I just let her go….if she wants to tell it again I'm gonna listen because I'm just glad she's still with me. But yesterday while she was helping me garden she told a story I'd never heard before….and it made me glad that I don't tune her out like I probably did 10 or 15 years ago. Trying so very hard to actually listen to my kids rather than giving them half my attention….because in no time flat they won't want to tell me anything!
Enjoy your visit with your dad!

  • I'm also a huge Game of Thrones fan…cannot get enough of it! I read the first book. It was very good and I was surprised at how closely the show has followed the book. So nice to share a visit with your Dad. Mine passed away almost three years ago and I miss him all the time. Cherish your times!

    Have a great weekend!
