Photography Cheat Sheet & Our 2012 Yearbook

Ummm…..how hard is the Tuesday after Labor Day weekend?!  UGH!  I hope you all had a great one!  We sure did.  We did a whole lot of nothing and enjoyed every minute of it – those are always my favorite kinds of weekends – the ones where you don’t really have any plans and you don’t really do anything noteworthy, but you have a great time hanging out at home with the people you love most!    Best 3 days I’ve had in a really long time!

If you’re new around here you may not know that I set one New Year’s Resolution every year – and then I blog about it  – because that’s the trick to sticking to a resolution – at least for me – accountability and only choosing one resolution a year.  (Maybe next year’s resolution should be to stop using run-on sentences? Nah, I’d never keep that one.)  So in 2011 I was resolute about blogging on a regular basis – and what do you know here I am still doing it – going on almost 3 years now.  In 2012 I decided to learn how to use my new big girl camera that I gifted myself for Christmas – and I did – and I’m still learning and loving photography.  This year’s resolution is all about eating my way to a healthier me.  You can find out more about that under the Paleo tab.

Today I want to share a little bit about photography.  Back in November of last year I wrote a post titled – Photography Tips for A Beginner From A Beginner.  Surprising to me, it’s one of my most popular posts!  Who would have thought people would actually like hearing tips from a newbie?  A bunch of you said you took notes from that post to keep handy when you’re using your camera, so I thought I’d help you out by putting a little cheat sheet together for you.  Hope this helps!

Our Fifth House - Photography Cheat Sheet

Doing a 365 photo challenge last year helped me learn so much.  Forcing myself to use my camera every day for an entire year not only taught me through hands on learning, but it also left me feeling inspired as each day I’d learn something new about myself, about my camera and often about the way I see the world.  I finally sat down and forced myself to sort through all of the photos I took last year in order to put together a family year book.  Considering it’s almost officially fall of 2013 I’d say it was about time right?  I used blurb to create the book.

Here are just a few of my favorite pages.  It’s a thick book – I don’t want to bore you.  ðŸ˜‰

This book sits on my coffee table reminding me that you’re never too old to learn something new – that every day is a day worth capturing  – that you really can do all things through Christ who strengthens you!

I’m looking forward to learning more, and I see a new lens and a fancier tripod in my future – awwww yeah!  Have you challenged yourself to learn something new lately?

  • Oh man I love this! I feel like we are one in the same… I have a fancy camera and never really learned how to use it. I may have to start Jan 1 with this challenge & your cheat sheet! I take everything with my iphone so that may be a hard habit to break. And I am also trying to start the whole paleo thing. I did the Whole30 and that was a eye opening experience! On another note, were you satisfied with Blurb? I'm needing to do a book of my wedding and cant decide where to do it! Are the pages those thick ones that lay flat?

  • I'm still sitting on all my 2012 photos to make into a photo book. I need to get on that. I have a DSLR but haven't been as diligent as I would like about learning to really use the manual settings. I vote getting a nifty fifty (50mm) as your next lens if you don't already have one!

  • I've always had on my todo list to get into one blog and follow it. I think I found that blog. I have a lot of back-reading to do, but I hope to catch up. I learned so much in just one blog. Thank you!

  • Just found your cheat sheet on Pinterest. I LOVE it! I am keeping it in my camera case so that I will always be able to find it. Perhaps I could keep a small copy attached to my camera strap, instead. Anyway, thanks for being so clever and so willing to share your information.

  • So happy I found you! Now I'm excited to use the camera my sister left me before she passed away! Photography has become a wonderful hobby..and therapy. Tks for all you share! !

  • Hi, Thanks so very much for your Cheat Sheet, I am so very thankful, because I have tried everything to try and remember those key elements of photography, I have some expensive equipment and for once in my life time I can finally understand how it all works.
    You are a genius.

Bless you for bessing me and many others.

  • Hi, I love your cheat sheet. I have been a photographer since 1960 aged 14. Now taking up photojournalism at 69 yrs young. Just getting to grips with these new fangled digital cameras. I have a Lumix FZ72 which is brilliant but it is like a computer and I am just working out how to use it like a “real” camera i.e. Praktica MTL 3 circa 1980. Keep up the good work with your blogs on Pin.
