old, bold and beautiful

Cleaning out closets often leads to decorating around here.

Last week I ran across the old federal style mirror we inherited while cleaning and organizing a storage closet.  I had honestly completely forgotten we owned this mirror.  It originally belonged to someone on my hub’s side of the family, and it’s been passed down through the generations.  It’s in really bad shape, which is why we chose to store it instead of displaying it in the first place.  I remember when we first received it we looked into having the mirror restored, but it was kind of pricey………..so we wrapped it up and stored it away…….planning to one day have it restored to display it proudly in our home.
I had forgotten all about it……..and forgotten all about our plan…….until I ran across it last week.
This time……………seeing it all old and worn……..with pieces missing………..

old bold and beautiful

It didn’t look like it needed to be restored…………..it looked like it needed to be dusted off and appreciated.  It looked like it needed to be loved and cherished just as it is………not for what it once was, or for what it might someday be………but for what it is today……just as it is……..old, bold and beautiful

Federal Style Mirror & Black and White Photo Vignette

So I wiped it down and found it a home.  I brought out a few of my favorite old black and white photos to keep it company.
Federal Style Mirror

And  as I’ve been walking by this vignette every day it’s been a great reminder to me of what real beauty is.  It’s not about the outward appearance or about hanging on to youthfulness.  It’s about standing confidently in who you are, just as you are right now.

  • I have an old mirror from my grandparents' home of years ago. It too could use some repair, but instead I lovingly hung it in every house we have owned, except this house. You are making me reconsider it's current closeted location and bringing it out once again.. xox

  • Oh good because I am old. And sometimes bold. 🙂
I love how you incorporated the mirror into a vignette and used something that has hung in the homes of your family before you. It has developed quite the cool and interesting patina and I too think it's awesome just the way it is!
