using a drapery rod as a closet rod

Last week while I was cleaning out the master closet I decided to do some reorganizing.  There were a few things kind of bugging me about the way our little walk-in closet was set up, so I made a couple of little tweaks.

If you’ve been around this little blog for a while you might remember that I used fabric scraps to “wall paper” the “unusable” wall.  You know how some closets have a weird wall where you can’t really hang a closet rod or shelves or anything that sticks out too far, basically making them “unusable” for any real closet storage?  Well, the wall to the right when you open our closet door is that kind of wall.  Being that I’m all about maximizing every bit of storage space, I used the fabric scraps on that wall to create a wall sized pin board for jewelry, belts and handbags.  I also attached a piece of crown moulding and a drapery rod to use for storing my heels.

While shoe storage is great and all, what I really needed in my closet was more hanging space.  So I did a little rearranging and discovered that this drapery rod actually makes for a quite nice closet rod to hang clothes!  I moved my blouses over to this rod, and when I was done I wondered to myself why I had never thought to do this before.

The drapery rod works so well with these wooden hangers as the hook part of the hanger twists.  This doesn’t take up too much space, and my blouses are completely visible and accessible!  This drapery rod turned closet rod is such a great solution for those “unusable” closet walls or really for any place you need clothing storage but are short on space.

Have you ever thought to use to a drapery rod for something other than hanging curtains?  I’ve also used them to organize ties and hats
