Last January after I did a major master closet clean-out I shared a few organization tips. While my closet is a walk-in and I’m thankful for the space we have, it is on the smaller side and I have to share this clothing storage space with my man………..who loves clothes just as much more than I do.
One of the tips I shared was to “re-evaluate & re-adjust” when needed. I think we all get into a rut or a routine of using a space the same way day in and day out, or at least I do. In my mind I’ll think, shoes go here, shirts here, sweaters there………and after a while when things start to get disorganized and don’t really work too well anymore……..that’s when I know it’s time to rethink things and rearrange some stuff.
Honestly, and you may not like to hear this, but when you’ve hit a wall and your closet is looking chaotic the best thing to do is to pull everything out and start from scratch with an empty closet. I know! Gah! Really?! But seriously, while it’s a major pain in the rear, it’s so worthwhile; and it really does help you to see your storage space with fresh eyes. When you’re looking at a blank space your mind won’t see “where things are supposed to go” but instead will see “where things could go” which is the whole point of a rearrange in the first place.
I just recently went through the process of pulling everything out and starting over. I’m not going to lie, it was a major pain, but I couldn’t be happier with our new set-up!
My hub’s clothes use to take up the entire top rack, but it was so inconvenient to have to stand on a chair to put shirts away or to get something down every day. He and I both wanted to have easy-with-in-reach access to grab or put away items that are most used everyday without having to get up and down on the chair we use as step stool.
So I moved all of his suits over to the bottom right……………
where he can reach them easily and still see all of his ties that are hanging on a drapery rod behind.
I moved my dressy blouses over to the drapery rod on the side which created enough room for my hub’s shirts to hang on the lower clothing rod.
And lastly, as you can see, I moved one of the shoes shelves up off the floor and brought in some cubeicals.
Can you tell I painted the section of the wall behind the shoe shelf a light pink? The hubs didn’t even notice! 😉
Maybe because all of his shoes are still down on the floor.
And all of his ugly tennis shoes are cleverly hidden in a big canvas bin that sits behind the chair. 😉
This new closet set-up is working so well for us. More often than not it’s not about needing more space it’s about making better use of the space you have. Taking the time to re-evaluate and rearrange some things is totally worthwhile. It may seem trivial but an organized closet really does put me in a better mood.
