no sew envelope pillow cover tutorial

no sew envelope pillow tutorial
My mom will be visiting from Southern California in a few weeks, so I’ve been busy sprucing up the guest room for her stay.  I had been wanting to add more pattern to the room and nothing does that better than new pillows.  I looked everywhere for a pair of fun, colorful king sized pillow shams, but wasn’t able to find any that I loved.  So I visited the fabric store and decided to make my own.  But of course I don’t know how to sew, so I got cozy with one of my bff’s – no sew hemming tape aka fusible bonding web.
As is the case with almost all of my projects, this is SUPER easy.  These are the only supplies needed.

(I prefer to use the fusible bonding web for heavy fabrics when I’m working with upholstery fabrics.)

This tutorial works for any size pillow.  You will start by measuring your pillow and then cutting your front and back pieces.  You will want to add a couple of inches to the width and length in order to have room to “sew” your seams together.  Once your front and back pieces are cut, you will cut the back piece in half.  This is where your envelope closure will be.
This next part might get tricky (insert sarcasm font).   Just make sure you go in order, hemming the envelope closure seam first, then overlapping the fabric and trimming the excess fabric.  Then you’ll “sew” your pillow all the way around.  Also be sure to lay your fabric pieces right sides together.

In case you’ve never used hemming tape before, it’s really easy to use.  You just cut the piece you need, lay it down, then put a damp washcloth over the seam you want to “sew” and then press an iron on top.  You will want your iron set to wool.  But don’t worry, these same directions can be found on the back of the package.  ðŸ˜‰

Once you’re done no-sewing all the way around your pillow, you will cut three small pieces of velcro and seal them on the envelope closure.  This part is somewhat optional depending on how fluffy your pillow is, but I always do this because it gives your pillow a much more polished fit.  This velcro fabric fusion is usually found in the same spot as the hemming tape in most fabric/craft stores.  It works the same way as the hemming tape; you just iron it on!

Hallelujah for no-sewing products!!   Once your pillow cover is done just turn the pillow right side out and insert your pillow form.

I love this fabric!  The print and the colors are so pretty and spring-y!
design tip: use color code of fabric to create a color palette for a room

Are you a no-sewer?  Someday I’ll learn to use a sewing machine but for now……….I’m pretty darn good at ironing.  ðŸ˜‰

  • These came out so pretty and it's awesome that they're no sew!! I'd love to feature a photo or two on our blog with full credit and link back to this tutorial–please let me know if that would be ok with you 🙂 -Abbey (atiderman@onlinefabricstore.net)

  • I do sew and pillows are one of my favorite things to make! A little tip: If you cut the back piece a little longer, you can make a bigger/wider "flap". It will allow you to overlap the pieces for a little more of an envelope flap. You won't even need velcrol

  • sounds and look really easy! Can I tell you something?…..have same quilt like yours in my master bedroom! I paired it with some geometrical designed pillow covers..

  • I love this fabric. I actually made a slipcover for a chair last year using this exact fabric. The colors and design of the fabric reminded me of the book 'Where the Wild Things Are', so that's what I called it. I was scrolling through my blogfeed and recognized the print. Yay for no sew pillows!

  • Yes, so true. I was working with a limited amount of fabric – only had just enough, so I had no room for a flap, but thanks for pointing that out -that would definitely work!
