Do you want to know what one of my biggest home related pet peeves is? When the toilet paper roll needs to be replaced and instead of taking the empty roll off and putting on a new one, the lazy person in question just rests a fresh roll on top of the empty roll. Do you know what I’m talking about? I don’t know why, but it just makes me crazy! I mean, just replace the roll already. How hard is it?!
Since I’m still working on the kid’s bathroom makeover (I know I’m the slowest maker over in all of blogland) and all of the hardware needed to be replaced (because I changed from shiny brass to brushed nickel) I thought maybe I could come up with a solution to this “too lazy to change the roll” situation.
I thought maybe if I went with one of those open style toilet tissue holders instead of the typical tension rod style that it might make changing the roll easier so maybe, just maybe the three other people that live here would actually change a roll of toilet tissue every once in a while. I liked the look of this one, but the satin nickel is out of stock at the moment.
The more I looked at these open style holders the more I thought that they looked an awful lot like drapery holdbacks. And the good news for me was that I already had a set on hand that I was originally planning to use in my girl’s room but never did. The good news for you is, if you like this style of holder, you can probably buy two holdbacks for the price of one toilet tissue holder because they’re typically sold in pairs.
I needed to make a little modification to make my drapery holdback work as a toilet tissue holder; but it only took about 5 minutes, and I had all of the materials needed on hand. Woohoo – love a no cost project!
Here’s how this went down.
The wood slice is completely optional. You could easily just attach the holdback to the wall, but I like the look of the wood slice. It’s kind of quirky for a kid’s bathroom, and I love a good mix of styles and textures. My holdback had an antique brass finish, so I used some rub ‘n buff in silver leaf to give it a satin nickel look to match the rest of the hardware in this bathroom. You can also see from the picture above that I replaced the finial with a small cabinet knob. I had to do this in order for the roll to fit over the top. All I did was glue the cabinet knob into place with some E6000.
Apart from the whole it only took 5 minutes to do and I didn’t have to spend any money thing, the best part is now there’s nowhere to “rest” a roll of toilet tissue when the roll is empty! *insert evil laugh* Let’s hope this really does solve the ol’ rest-the-roll situation. 😉
What are some of your home pet peeves? We all have them right? I try my best to let a lot of the little things go. I mean you really do have to choose your battles if you want to maintain a happy home don’t you? Some things though, I’m just like, but seriously how hard can it be? Remove empty roll. Add fresh roll. Am I missing the hard part?! 😉
this is so clever! love it, carmel!
