not your typical toilet tissue holder

Do you want to know what one of my biggest home related pet peeves is?  When the toilet paper roll needs to be replaced and instead of taking the empty roll off and putting on a new one, the lazy person in question just rests a fresh roll on top of the empty roll.  Do you know what I’m talking about?  I don’t know why, but it just makes me crazy!  I mean, just replace the roll already.  How hard is it?!

Since I’m still working on the kid’s bathroom makeover (I know I’m the slowest maker over in all of blogland) and all of the hardware needed to be replaced (because I changed from shiny brass to brushed nickel) I thought maybe I could come up with a solution to this “too lazy to change the roll” situation.
I thought maybe if I went with one of those open style toilet tissue holders instead of the typical tension rod style that it might make changing the roll easier so maybe, just maybe the three other people that live here would actually change a roll of toilet tissue every once in a while.  I liked the look of this one, but the satin nickel is out of stock at the moment.

The more I looked at these open style holders the more I thought that they looked an awful lot like drapery holdbacks.  And the good news for me was that I already had a set on hand that I was originally planning to use in my girl’s room but never did.  The good news for you is, if you like this style of holder, you can probably buy two holdbacks for the price of one toilet tissue holder because they’re typically sold in pairs.
I needed to make a little modification to make my drapery holdback work as a toilet tissue holder; but it only took about 5 minutes, and I had all of the materials needed on hand.  Woohoo – love a no cost project!
Here’s how this went down.
turning a drapery holdback into a toilet tissue holder
The wood slice is completely optional.  You could easily just attach the holdback to the wall, but I like the look of the wood slice.   It’s kind of quirky for a kid’s bathroom, and I love a good mix of styles and textures.   My holdback had an antique brass finish, so I used some rub ‘n buff in silver leaf to give it a satin nickel look to match the rest of the hardware in this bathroom.  You can also see from the picture above that I replaced the finial with a small cabinet knob.  I had to do this in order for the roll to fit over the top.  All I did was glue the cabinet knob into place with some E6000.
Apart from the whole it only took 5 minutes to do and I didn’t have to spend any money thing, the best part is now there’s nowhere to “rest” a roll of toilet tissue when the roll is empty!  *insert evil laugh*  Let’s hope this really does solve the ol’ rest-the-roll situation.  ðŸ˜‰

What are some of your home pet peeves?  We all have them right?  I try my best to let a lot of the little things go.  I mean you really do have to choose your battles if you want to maintain a happy home don’t you?  Some things though, I’m just like, but seriously how hard can it be?  Remove empty roll.  Add fresh roll.  Am I missing the hard part?!    ðŸ˜‰

  • Cute but I'm curious how well it "rolls" to release the paper. It seems like you might need to use a 2nd hand to help guide it…? Clever ingenuity, though.

  • That is such a cool idea! I have a toilet paper pet peeve and that is that the TP in my kids' bathroom is always – always – rolling across the floor. Clearly I need to change up the TP holder! Thanks for the fun idea 🙂

  • It actually rolls pretty easily – totally one handed. 😉 But, it's not as free moving as a traditional holder which is actually a plus in the kids bathroom where they tend to use way more than needed. Hoping this helps with clogging issues too. ha!

  • Love it! We totally have a giraffe hook as our tissue holder in one of the bathrooms. I don't know why, bc the tissue is always just sitting on the counter?!?!?

  • I had a holder similar to the one you linked, and my hubby would rest the new roll on top of it. The old empty was still on there, it could have just been slid off, and the new one on, but no…. he had to rest the new one on top. I think he did it just to bug me! 🙂

  • I love this idea! My husband and I are both lazy when it comes to replacing the roll the 'right' way — I think we've just been stacking on top of the empty roll in our bathroom for over a year! — and I've been looking for something a little nicer to look at but still lazy friendly. This looks ideal. I know what I'm doing this weekend – thanks!

  • SERIOUSLY!!! There is literally a new roll sitting on the empty tube RIGHT now at my house. Drives me craaaaazy. C'mon people. This is a genius idea.

  • This is very creative! I have too many pet peeves to count 😛 I'd take TP on top of the dispenser as opposed to the empty TP roll I usually inherit…
