5 minute homemade body cream

Is your skin dry in the winter?  Mine is dry almost year round, but it is really super dry during the winter months.  Taking scalding hot showers probably doesn’t help, but how else can I warm up when it’s 11 degrees outside?!  When my skin is really dry it’s also really itchy.  Am I alone in that?

In my quest to “reduce my toxic load” I decided to put my essential oils to good use and make my own body cream to combat my dry, itchy winter skin.  Have you ever looked at the ingredients on the back of a store bought tube of body lotion or a jar of body cream?  There are all kinds of chemical ingredients I can’t pronounce listed.
This homemade body cream only took about 5 minutes to make, requires just 3 all natural (easy to pronounce) ingredients,  and is getting the job done better than any body cream I’ve ever used before!

Here’s my super simple recipe:

1/2 cup of unrefined virgin Coconut Oil (Coconut oil is great for hydrating the skin.  It moisturizes, conditions and softens the skin.)
1/4 cup of 100% pure natural unscented Shea Butter  (Shea butter is loaded with vitamin A which is great for the skin.)
20 drops of Young Living Lavender Essential Oil   (Lavender not only smells wonderful, but it is also soothing and refreshing.  It is anti-inflammatory and is known as a natural antihistamine which makes it absolutely wonderful for the “itchiness” that tends to come with dry skin.)
Put all three ingredients into a mixing bowl and use an electric hand mixer to combine.  Beat on med-high for about 1 to 2 minutes.  Boom – done!
I’ve been taking about a teaspoon and warming it between my palms then rubbing it on my legs and feet at night.  It’s like my own at-home spa treatment, and my skin could not be happier!  And the bonus is lavender is so wonderfully calming and relaxing to use just before bed so it’s a total win-win!

If you’ve been wanting to try some natural alternatives to skin/body care or if you are just interested in learning more about using essential oils, I can’t recommend Young Living essential oils enough!  Essential oils are natures’s best kept secret.  I’ve been using Young Living’s oils and products for about 6 months now, and I’ve admittedly become a little obsessed.  Feel free to sign up here to purchase some oils to use for yourself (the most economical way cheapest way to get your hands on these great oils is to become a wholesale member and buy a premium starter kit.  Best. • Thanks for sharing the recipe! I too, love to take hot showers in the winter and my legs have been dry and itchy the last two weeks. We use coconut oil sometimes for lotion, but I've been out and need to get more. I haven't tried shea butter before and I want to make this lotion.

We use Native American Nutritionals essential oils and love their top therapeutic grade quality and their price. They're cheaper since they're not a MLM company. But I am interested in some of the YL blends and some of their kids products.

Have you tried their NingXia Red drink, and if so, what do you think about it? Thanks so much for sharing all the wonderful info about essential oils. 🙂

  • This sounds great! I recently used basically the same recipe; however, I melted all the ingredients (in a double boiler) and poured the mix into an empty container (deodorant-type container…ordered on Amazon). It hardened and voila I have a wonderful lotion bar that I can rub on my hands and feet!!

  • I use coconut oil too. Lavender has so many thereupetic properties and I love the smell of it with the coconut. By the way I bought the Argan oil you suggested and my husband and I have both been using it regularly – we love it! I feel like I can't even leave my house and face the harsh cold without a layer of it on. Its amazing how it gets absorbed into the skin and doesn't feel greasy at all. Thanks for sharing about that find!!

  • Wow, that's what I was searching for, what a stuff! I really like the way you describe. A good body lotion is an essential part of a good skincare regime. So i regularly use sakare's body lotions.
