Trip Report – Caribbean Cruise

As you may remember last Friday my family set out on a little 3 night Caribbean cruising adventure.

Trip Report - Royal Caribbean: Enchantment of the Seas
It was our very first cruise, and we all had a great time!   Although I think 90% of the fun had to with the fact that we went on this cruise with 10 other families from our new neighborhood.  One of my sweet new friends organized a group rate, and the timing was just perfect.  Since this cruise would be happening just a few short weeks after the holidays, the hubs and I decided to gift the cruise to our kids for Christmas!  I put together a gift bag for each of our kids filled with a couple of disposable cameras, a scrapbook, some stickers, a new bathing suit, sunglasses and flip flops.  Then my friend and “cruise director” put together the cutest flyer with all the cruise information as well as a list of all the families that would be attending, and I added the flyer to each of their gift bags.

Admittedly 6 a.m. is not my best hour of the day, so on Christmas morning I didn’t get any video of them jumping up and down screaming with delight.  But I hope the memory of their shocked, surprised, excited faces stays locked away in my brain forever.
We cruised with Royal Caribbean on the Enchantment of the Seas.  Now that we’re home, bags are unpacked and I’ve had a chance to sit down and think, I’m sharing my first time cruiser’s thoughts on our experience.

I wasn’t crazy about the food.
So as y’all know my family is gluten free.  I’m happy to report that Royal Caribbean does have quite a few gluten free options in the buffet areas, dining room and on the room service menu.  They had gluten free rolls at dinner, gluten free pancakes at breakfast and gluten free hamburger buns as well as gluten free pizza.  My kids were pretty happy about all of that.  However, the food in general just wasn’t all that great.  The service was wonderful.  The food, as my husband so aptly described, was like banquet food.  It wasn’t bad at all, it just wasn’t fantastic……just nothing to really write home about.
Weather and routing caused some issues.
We boarded Friday afternoon at Port Canaveral, Florida, which was a 6 hour drive for us from Charleston, so we drove in the night before and shuttled over from our hotel.   Our original cruise itinerary called for CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island, on Saturday, and then we were supposed to stop in Nassau on Sunday.  But a couple days before we boarded they changed the schedule and flopped those days which would have been fine except for the fact that the weather turned ugly, and we ended up not making it to CocoCay at all.  This was a major bummer as we were all really excited about having a day on the beach in CocoCay.  In addition the boat was pretty rocky as they were navigating around the storm.   Thankfully no one in our party got sick, but they did put out the barf bags on all the stairwells just in case.  The kids didn’t seem to be bothered at all.
Was January a good time to cruise?
I think so, even despite our little blip with the weather.  I don’t think storms like that are very common in January, and the benefit of traveling after the holidays but during the winter months is that kids are back in school and the usual “vacation traffic” isn’t an issue.
I wish we had taken full advantage of our Nassau Day.

Caribbean Cruise - Nassau - Trip Report

Nassau is bright and colorful, and I enjoyed walking around just looking at all the buildings.

However I think we made a mistake not scheduling any excursions for that day.  My girl enjoyed getting a little hair wrap in the marketplace……….

but I think we should’ve taken advantage of the good weather we had that day and gone to the water park at Atlantis.  But hindsight is always 20/20.
Irons aren’t allowed on board.
I packed wrinkle resistant pieces and rolled them instead of folding them into my duffle bag.

Then as soon as we got to our room I hung all of my dresses and used my flat iron to smooth out the very few wrinkles that needed smoothing.  On a side note – Y’all that striped swing tank was a Walmart find for ……..$4.97!
I’m glad we had a window, but next time I’d like a balcony.

It was really nice to have daylight streaming in through the window in our room.  A friend of ours had a balcony and after seeing it I definitely want one next time we cruise.  Waking up to that view and the ocean air with a hot cup of coffee in your hand just sounds dreamy doesn’t it?
Things for kids to do on the ship?
Well, I was a little disappointed with the kids activities or rather lack there of on the Enchantment of the Seas, especially because the Enchantment is touted as family friendly.  That being said my opinion is probably largely based on the fact that we never made it to CocoCay so we were on the ship for a lot of uninterrupted hours……..hours that we should have been spending on a white sand beach in the hot, hot sun.  😉  The arcade area was kind of on the small side.  There is a kids club (11 and under) and a teen club, and our kids did enjoy themselves very much.  But I think that had a lot to do with the fact that they were with their friends.  The Enchantment has a really cool bungee trampoline and rock climbing wall, though those activities are outside and were closed during the bad weather.
Adult entertainment?
The numerous shows and dance parties were all great fun.  And our group most definitely enjoyed the karaoke as well as the piano bar.  There are videos……….but you’d have to kill me first if you want to see them.  😉
I believe this was Wanted Dead or Alive……who doesn’t love a little Bon Jovi?  #chucktownrepresenting
Overall…….
We really did have an absolute blast!  I’m not sure I’m a “cruiser” though, and I’m not sure if I could handle anything longer than 3 nights.  Then again the bad weather we experienced has probably tainted my opinion.  I’d love to try a Disney cruise someday…….because y’all know I’m a Disney fanatic.  And after getting an up close look at the Disney Dream ship while we were in Nassau, it definitely looks like a good time!   And I’d most definitely do another group cruise, without question, in a heartbeat.  If you’ve never been on a big group vacation with friends I highly recommend it!
protecting the innocent  😉
And a cruise really is awesome for a big group as everyone can just kind of do their own thing and meet up at designated times (*walkie talkies make communicating really easy as there’s no cell coverage), and a cruise offers something for every different kind of person.  The guys congregated in the sports bar quite a bit, while the ladies did spa treatments or just laid by the pool.  It really was a great vacation for a large party.
All in all I thought the Enchantment of the Seas was good.  The service was fantastic throughout.  The rooms were good, very clean.  The kids really loved the towel animals house keeping left on the bed everyday.  It was a good ship for a group and for a family.  I just wish the food had been a little better, and that we would have made it to CocoCay.  There were no consolations made in regards to us having to skip our stop there though I realize that the weather is completely out of their control.  That being said, it would have been nice if they had offered a little something for that disappointing news ………but I guess weather could ruin a beach vacation anywhere.
Regardless we made the best of our vacation time, and we’re so grateful for this amazing group of people that have welcomed our family in to their circle and made life in our new city so much fun!  I know the kids thoroughly enjoyed vacationing with their new friends, and that’s what made this trip all the more special for us.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to “Julie” our “Cruise Director” for planning, organizing and inviting us to join in on the fun!  I’m so grateful to be your neighbor and friend!  xxoo  – C
Life in general would be no fun at all without my shipmate ( #seewhatididthere #couldnthelpmyself ) who has a way of making everything ridiculously hilarious.
Have you been on any cruises?  Tell me about your experiences.  What did you love?  What did you not like?  What’s the best cruise you’ve ever been on?  I’ve literally had that song Cruisin’ stuck in my brain for weeks now, and I’m so surprised no one sang that during karaoke.  #iloveitwhenwerecruisintogether

  • Glad you enjoyed it despite the weather. My #2's BF family was on one last weekend as well, and said they were diverted due to the weather. I have yet to go on one as I get motion sick. Would hate to be stranded and feeling awful.

  • I'm going on Serenade of the Seas in September. My first royal Caribbean, but it'll be my fifth cruise. Nassau is fun, but I've been twice, and don't know that I need to go back.

  • I have been on cruise a couple of times. It was ok. No a cruiser over 😉 Sorry the weather wasnt that great, maybe next time!

  • We have taken two cruises – with two different leading cruise lines – and had a very similar experience. I think cruises are a low stress way for people who don't travel much to go someplace exciting. My husband and I are both very experienced travelers, so for us, it feels like being trapped in a big floating hotel. We are foodies, so like you, the food all seemed like what you'd get at the mall food court or Chilis/Red Lobster. It was fine. The service was impeccable! The excursions were really fun! All in all, it was a pretty affordable way to go. Our kids are begging for a Disney Cruise so we're looking into that for 2017. 🙂

  • Yeah if you've been there before you might just want to hang back on the ship that day and maybe do a spa treatment or just lay by the pool or something. I've heard September is another great low traffic time to cruise. Have fun!

  • Haha – "trapped in a big floating hotel" …..a friend in our group later referred to the ship we were on as The "Entrapment" of the Seas. 🙂 And yes the service really was top notch, and it was very affordable all things considered. Everyone I know that's ever done a Disney cruise has had nothing but great things to say!

  • My parents cruise all the time on RC. They absolutely love it – my Dad is a sailor so he loves the days at sea. They have been on every ship, I believe, and some are definitely better than others. We went on our first cruise last March for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a spur of the moment, last minute decision and I would say to definitely avoid cruising in the March until Easter timeframe (spring break). I would say at least half the passengers were college students and there was beer funneling on the deck by the pool, along with wet t shirt contests, etc… I was very thankful we did not have our kids with us. I like to have fun, but I don't like being next to a sloppy drunk coed by the pool. The entertainment on our ship was fantastic, though, and we enjoyed the food in the dining room – and we did dine twice in the specialty restaurants. Food was top notch there!

  • I've been on several cruises, including one Disney Cruise. In my opinion, Disney Cruise is in a league of its own. I don't even like Disney, and my kids aren't into their stuff either. We went because friends of ours were going and we wanted to be with them. Regardless, the food, the service and the amenities are unbelievably well done and we had an amazing time. My sharpest memory is of my disbelief that over the 4 day cruise, which was of course FULL of kids, I never saw one employee on that ship give a child the "evil eye". They were always "on" and sweet as could be.

  • We have been on several cruises, and started when our children were small with a three day cruise, just like you, AND we could not get off at the private island either! We have since been to Alaska, Bermuda, and all over the Caribbean. We have been on Disney, when the kids were little, but mostly RCCL.We love cruising. You need to give it another chance. Take a seven day on on of the new ships. There is so much to do it will make your head spin. I know people who cruise on these ships, and never get off the entire cruise! My children leaned to roller blade and ice skate on a cruise ship! Realize, that they don't, and can't put their biggest and best ship out there on a 3-day. Hope this helps! !

  • I have never been on a cruise before and I am partially afraid that I will be sea sick but this looks like so much fun! Glad you had fun!

By the way, I love your blog! I've been following for quite some time!

  • I went on my first cruise 30 years ago on our honeymoon and I've been on probably 15 since then – mostly for special occasions (my in-laws 50th anniv., my mother's 80th, my husband's 40th and our 30th anniv). Many were only 3 days and a few were 7 days. We had rough weather on a 3 day cruise in January, too! My husband absolutely loves cruises as he's a water and beach kinda guy and he gets far enough away from work that he can't be reached so he actually relaxes. In my opinion, I have enjoyed the 7 day cruises the most as I like seeing all the different ports, I always try to plan a balance of some days with excursions and some just beach days and as fun as I've had cruising with my kids a cruise as just a couple is the ultimate decadence and very worry-free. Glad you enjoyed yours! And though most people love the food on cruises – and some cruise just to eat -I agree with you. It's never been my favorite aspect.

  • We've been on 7 cruises, 6 different cruise lines. It's one of our favorite ways to vacation. We've been to different areas of the Caribbean 3 times, Mexico twice and also to Hawaii and Alaska. We've enjoyed all of our cruises but I think my favorite was to Alaska. SO different and incredibly beautiful. It was a bit odd to be packing boots and coats rather than shorts and flip flops. But wow…so amazing to be hiking around on glaciers and playing with sled dog puppies, you know? And yes, balconies are so amazing! We usually get an interior room so as to save money…not even a window. But for Alaska everyone told us to get a balcony so you could whale watch and see all the scenery since you are cruising through fijords and such. So glad we did! I'm not sure I'll ever be able to go back to an interior room again.

Normally we have decent weather and don't have issues with ports of call being cancelled. That being said, our last cruise a little over a year ago to the Caribbean had two of our four ports cancelled due to bad weather. We were horribly disappointed but so impressed with how quickly the cruise staff put together extra activities to keep us all entertained. (Interestingly enough, my in-laws have been on more cruises than I can count…they probably go at least 2-3 times a year and have never once had a port cancelled due to weather.) We've taken our kids on two cruises…one when they were really little and one when they were teens (well, the youngest was 8…we have a big gap between our 3rd and 4th child). Both trips have been huge hits with them. I agree with the person who said maybe you should try a longer cruise so as to have the opportunity to get on a ship with more activities and amenities. Also, yes….paying for some shore excursions, whether you do it through the ship or on land in person, is definitely worth it.

I've never been on a Disney cruise but I hear it is absolutely incredible. It's on my bucket list. 🙂

  • I've only been on one cruise through Carnival, and we went to the Bahamas out of Charleston for 5-6 days. I have to say that was enough time for us on a boat. We loved our time there, but it being just my husband and I, we really saw the benefit and appeal to having friends come with us. We had a great time–but the vibe of the ship definitely calls for groups of friends spending a vacation together.

We enjoyed our time on shore in Nassau and then one of the private ship islands. We loved the private island the best–really just a day of relaxing, exploring on our own, and swimming. We didn't have an excursion, but we never felt like we needed one. In Nassau though, we wished we had done an excursion. We felt a little lost, overwhelmed by the locals trying to sell you things, and didn't really know how to spend our time without going far off from the ship (we're not big shoppers). So we walked to a beach we'd been told about, and found a local place to eat–but we felt like we wasted time and energy–we were so exhausted!

Food was good–there were a few exceptional foods that we couldn't get enough of! Otherwise everything was pretty mediocre. Room service for free was amazing. We enjoyed a lot of activities on the ship, but at times felt we didn't have anything to do–we don't gamble or drink which cuts out some stuff. I think I really enjoyed the performances and the game show type events.

I think it's a great way to spend time in a new place trying new things, not having to worry about driving somewhere, but instead relaxing and enjoying things with friends and/or new friends! I felt like 6 days gave us enough time to enjoy things on the ship, but also enjoy the places we docked. I would love to do a Caribbean or Mexican cruise, and see about spending a few extra days to see 3-4 places, instead of just 2.

Would LOVE to do a Disney Cruise. I have heard they are exceptional and every last detail is thought of–in typical Disney fashion.

I do think the best part, was the fact we were too cheap to pay for wifi, so we were off the grid in our books for 6 days. There is a huge relief in knowing you can't be reached! It forces you to relax.

  • This was super helpful – I've never been on a cruise, and my husband's family really likes them so we've talked about it, but I've been nervous… the idea of a vacation where you can't just try all different restaurants whenever you feel like it, go to any local attraction you're in the mood for, etc. always sounded sort of limited, and I was afraid one of us would find out we get sea sick right at the start of a few days at sea! This helped me picture a little more clearly what a cruise would be like
