Office Update – Still Debating

Project “my home office” is steadily, albeit the steady pace of a turtle, making it’s way to the finish line.  When last we checked in on progress, the walls were painted and I was debating between paint swatches on the sideboard.  Thought I’m not that far ahead, with just 2 more players in place the room is starting to take shape.

The Curtains Are Up!

Holy crazy difference!  The curtains made this space feel so much more…..I don’t know what word to use…..but “grown-up” keeps coming to mind.  The black background with green fern leaf brings a bit of a coastal vibe against the pale pink walls.  Yet it also adds some drama to the space.   I’m glad I went with the fern leaf pattern as opposed to the palm print I debated.  It’s a little less trendy but still drives home that pink and green combo I love so much.

And I basically die over these lucite curtain rods and brass rings!

And The Rug Is Here Too!

The rug is in place now too, and I’ve been playing around with the arrangement of the gallery wall I’m planning to hang above the sideboard.   Although even with the curtains and rug in play, I’m still debating paint swatches for the sideboard.  I’ve eliminated red as an option as I feel like there’s enough happening in here with color.  I think a bold red will take away from the art I’m hanging.

So now it’s down to white, dark green or light green.  I’m also considering not painting it at all as with the rug in place the wood tones are broken up just enough.  I’m still leaning towards painting because this piece feels really heavy, and I think it draws the eye away from the beauty of the desk.   What are your thoughts?  Clearly I’m not afraid to make bold design moves.  So if you’ve got an idea I haven’t considered, throw it at me!

  • I’m really liking the middle green color for the sideboard. I think it would be an awesome pop of color against that wall and I think it would pair really well with your curtains!

  • If you want to make the desk the focal point, I would go with white. Although I’m not sure I would do a bright white as the sample looks on my computer. Maybe a soft white? It would blend in more with the bottom of the wall, even if you were to glaze it. At this point, when I looked at your pic with the sideboard in its natural wood, my eye was drawn directly to the sideboard. I really didn’t see the desk. I can’t wait to see the gallery wall! jmho! 🙂

  • I love it as is, it takes on a dark tone like the background in the drapes. White would just so-so and either of the greens would take away from the drapes. I say let the art and your accessories shine as more contrast.

  • Let that baby shine in its natural state! I think the white and the lighter green will blend into the wall too much. The green in the middle pairs well with the curtains, but I think will take away from the pop of green that the curtains provide. I love the hardware on the sideboard but maybe you could change that up for a pop of green?

  • I think the dark green would be too matchy-matchy with the curtains. The white is always a classic option, but I think the most interesting choice would be the lighter green.

  • Not white, as it would fade into your pretty wainscotting. The greens are pretty, but agree with the others that it would take away from your stunning drapes. Have you considered a high gloss black? And then change the pulls out, use either a chunkier gold knob or even green? I think it would pull from the rug, chandy and the drapes.

  • I agree with Lauren, a high gloss black might be perfect, and, additional, I personally would change the lamps to the darker green, keep the white shades. I absolutely loooove the curtains and the rods.

  • I like the idea of glossy black for the sideboard. I agree that white would blend too much, and think the greens would take away from the drapes. Do you absolutely have to use the sideboard? What about something lucite instead? Just a thought. Loving how the room is coming together and those curtain rods are TO DIE for.

  • I agree with the comment above. Stain or paint the sideboard black and pick up the green in the art work. Loving the lucite curtain rods. When I saw them, I thought “genius idea”.

  • Those drapes are EVERYTHING! I love the contrast they provide against the pale pink walls.
For the sideboard… I say leave as is or I really like the idea of black. In my opinion, any shade of green will take away from the drapes. You’re design aesthetic always inspires me!!

  • Suggest a subtle gold metallic to pick up the hardware in the room. Must be done right though..not just a can of spray paint. Could be very elegant.

  • I think the lighter shade of green would be a nice contrast. Not blend in too well like the white would with the wainscoting and the darker green with the drapes.

  • I’m suffering from curtain rod envy! I’ve been eyeing those for months for my dining room and trying to justify the cost. Are they as beautiful in person as they look online?

For what it’s worth, I lean toward one of the greens for the sideboard but I’d suggest waiting until you have everything else done. Then see which color speaks to you.

  • Not afraid of bold design moves……then go for black & white stripe doors to match rug! The body of the sideboard could be either black or white….

  • That’s a tough one. I would wait until everything is done, paintings hung and desk styled, etc and see how you feel about it then.

  • I’d do one of the greens for sure. I like the softer one. I agree, the side board takes away from the drama of the desk!

  • I think it would look great black. And I agree that gold hardware would compliment it.

  • Such a beautiful room, Carmen! Those curtains with that wall color. . . perfection! It is really such a lovely room already. I would probably wait to decide on the paint color for the sideboard until you have finished everything else. As it stands right now, I like the lighter green with gold hardware. I do love the darker green color but in the pictures it appears to be very close to the green in the curtains and might end up looking too matchy-matchy. I agree with you that the piece takes away from the desk a bit in it’s current finish. My eye is immediately drawn to it, rather then the beautiful desk. Can’t wait to see the final reveal!

  • Everyone has given me so many differing ideas, which is so great, but also confusing. lol – I think I am going to wait until I finish the gallery wall. Hopefully then I’ll some clarity. 😉

  • Stunning! I’m voting leave as is or paint gloss black. Something that won’t distract from the colors you do have but still show up against the wainscotting. Then just use some really pretty hardware to update/show it off.
