Office Update – Sideboard Finally Painted

While I’m busy working on my son’s bedroom for the One Room Challenge, I’m also very close to crossing the proverbial finish line in my home office!  Cue Cece Peniston’s Finally……dear gracious, I’m aging myself aren’t I?  Those of you who have been along for the ride may remember that I’ve been wading through the waters of design indecision. #thestruggleisreal

The Sideboard Saga

To recap for the new folks (hi there and welcome to the crazy 😉  ), I just couldn’t for the life of me figure out what color I wanted to paint this sideboard.  I mean, I knew it needed a fresh look.

The dark heavy wood was hogging all of the attention.  And really stealing the thunder of my burl wood table. For goodness sake, forget Baby, nobody puts burl wood in the corner!

So I did what any normal design blogger does when they’re struggling with design indecision, I blogged about and asked for you to weigh in with your thoughts and opinions.  And you guys did not disappoint!  A few of you said I should wait until the room was more put together, and I had the rug, curtains and art in place before deciding on a color.  Such sound level-headed advice!  God bless you thoughtful people!  Thank you all for being the voice of reason.

I took your wisdom to heart.  I got the curtains hung and the rug in place.  And while those things helped me to immediately rule out the color red as I felt it would probably be way too loud and in your face with all the pattern and color already going on in the space, I still could not for the life of me choose a color. So once again, I barked or rather blogged up your tree again.  But really, what would I do without you guys?  Probably bug my husband to death.  😉

Going With My Gut

And after once again conferring with you all, I finally made up my mind!  I think either of the greens would have been a little too contrived, maybe a bit “too decorated” for me.  That’s a thing right?  You get what I’m saying?  Just nod your heads and smile.  😉  I also think green would have drawn the eye away from the desk/table, which was the opposite effect I was going for.

So I had to go with my gut, even if going white was in my mind “the safe choice”.  I almost always go the opposite way, preferring to go bold.  But in my office, I really just wanted this sideboard to melt into the background.  I wanted it to serve its functional storage purpose without drawing too much attention.  So I decided white, albeit safe and kind of boring, was the best choice for the job.

The white blends into the wainscoting but also brightens up the whole room.

• DIY Details – I used Amy Howard Home’s One Step Paint in Bauhaus Buff.  It’s a white that is just slightly brighter than our trim color.  It took 3 coats to cover this dark wood beast!  Then I sealed it with a topcoat of satin polyurethane.

I’m really pleased with the end result!  But mostly, I’m just happy to have finally made up my indecisive mind!

And I love that now my beautiful burl wood desk and gorgeous lady in green can have the spotlight they deserve.

Do you ever wrestle with design indecision for months on end?   Now that I’m finally over that hurdle, I’m in the homestretch!  I’m hoping to share the finished space in a couple weeks!
