What’s On My TBR……

TBR stands for To Be Read, in case you’re not familiar with the vernacular of book nerds.  😉

It’s been a good while since I’ve shared a book review here on the blog.  I figured before sharing any reviews I’d start with a short list of what’s currently in the queue.  Two things about me and the way I read.  1. I go through spurts.  I’ll tear through stacks of books pretty voraciously.  And then I’ll get swept up in a tv series like Gilmore Girls or Bloodline, and books/reading will take a back burner for a while.  2.  Though as much as I love a good Netflix marathon, nothing really feeds my soul like reading a book.

Books feel like comfort food.  They feel like eating grandma’s home cooking.  Not like someone else is making grandma’s recipe.  Like grandma herself is making the meal, in her kitchen, while you sit there watching with big eyes at the way she moves so gracefully around the kitchen……waiting with excited, hungry anticipation.  That’s what reading is like for me.  That being said, tv, Netflix, dare I even say movies (insert monkey covering mouth emoji), is like fast food.  And let’s face it, as much as we all love grandma’s home cooking……sometimes fast food hits the spot.

I find that making a list, a To Be Read list, helps me to focus.  It helps me to keep my screen watching in check.  And it keeps me excited and motivated to get back to the soul-nourishing stuff.

To Be Read List - 2017 q

My Current TBR List

  1. To Kill A Mockingbird  – My book-loving 7th grade son puts me to shame.  He typically reads a book a week, sometimes two.  He hasn’t read To Kill A Mockingbird yet, so I got it for his Easter basket.  I plan to reread it while he’s reading it for the first time.  I’ve found that reading a story you loved as a young person is a whole new experience as an adult.  It’s as if because you’re own life story has developed you draw new things from the already known story as you discover it all over again.  Do you ever re-read the classics from your childhood?
  2. After You  – I’m finally ready to dive in and find out what Jojo Moyes has in store for one of my all-time favorite fictional characters.  Me Before You left me with such a book hangover that I just couldn’t bring myself to read the sequel.  But I think I’m finally at a place where I feel ready to move forward.  I know, dramatic much?  I can’t help it.  The first book was life altering.  It really was.  I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I have to know find out for myself.
  3. A Monster Calls  –  I’ve already read this and will be reviewing it very soon.  I read the book in about 3 days.  More on this one coming soon.
  4. The Zookeeper’s Wife – I saw a preview for the movie they’ve made of this book, and it looks amazing.  I can’t wait to read this one!
  5. And Everyday the Road Home Gets Longer –  I’ve already read this one.  It’s a novella you can read in one sitting.  I’ll share my thoughts very soon.
  6. The Alchemist – Over the years so many people have made reference to this story, and truth be told, I’m tired of being out of the loop.  Curiosity has killed me.
  7. Three Sisters, Three Queens – If books are comfort food, historical fiction is my Thanksgiving dinner.  And Philippa Gregory is the best homemade stuffing you’ve ever had.  Why oh why am I comparing reading to eating…….someone stop me……this is getting weird, fast.
  8. A Man Called Ove – This one is by, Fredrik Backman, author of And Everyday the Road Home Gets Longer.   I’ve heard great things about this one.

FYI

Target is currently running a 20% off book sale.  If you’re like me and refuse to read on a device or if you like to gift people books, you might want to jump on this sale!

  • Just finished a Man Called Ove this morning @ 4:30 a.m. Obviously, one I couldn’t put down! Such a sweet story! Your book list came at the perfect time as I’m now looking for a new one to start! Love your blog!

  • I love your book reviews! Thank you for helping me stay in the loop. I find myself battling time btwn books and blogs! And blogs are winning! I have a stack of books TBR!

  • Ha! I will be doing good if I read eight books THIS YEAR! I used to love to read and I do still enjoy it, although not quite as much. It’s hard to find the time, and when I do, there are often other things I’d rather be doing. Enough about me and my reading! Just wanted to say I did read “After You” (I read the first book last year), and I did like it. Not as good as the first, but I liked it.

  • You’ve perfectly captured how I feel about reading vs tv/movies! It can be a dilemma as to how to spend my precious free time – and blog reading is a whole other pull. I read almost every night, but lately I’ve been so tired I can only keep my eyes open for a few pages. Love your TBR list. Mine includes Me Before You (I’m way behind but if I hear there’s going to be a movie I wait to read the book so I won’t hate the movie), Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, Secrets of a Charmed Life, Tale of Two Cities (reread), and Sarah’s Key.

  • Are you on Goodreads? I love Goodreads for finding out new books and seeing what other people are reading. I have a librarian friend on it, and she posts really great reviews, so I get a lot of new book ideas from her.
I tried and tried to get into the Zookeeper’s Wife and failed. It’s written pretty badly and so I gave up. Hopefully the movie is better. Curious to see what you’ll think.
I listened to a Man Called Ove on Audible. I LOVED it (took a few chapters though). I bought the book 2nd hand when I saw it after I was finished, because I am curious to see how I’ll find reading it vs listening to it. Plus there is a Oscar-nominated movie, so excited to see that.
I read Alchemist years ago. I neither hated nor loved it. Short is a bonus!
I have not heard of the others on your list. The Sisters one sounds the most like something I’d love. I’m like you – I read a stack in one go and then not for a while. My 8-yr old and I are currently listening to Harry Potter book 2 and loving it. I read most when I was younger, but never did get to read the last one or maybe even 2, so will be fun to see them unfold through his eyes.

  • I am on Goodreads but I don’t do reviews over there. Interesting thoughts on Zookeeper…the movie preview looks fantastic so I’m super curious to read this one.

Ok- and I’ve apparently been living under a rock because I had no I deal A Man Called Ove was made into a movie……and nominated for an OSCAR?! It’s like seriously, how did I not know that?

I read the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe with my kids and it was great fun reliving it with them – and then seeing the movie!

  • I can tell you that Me Before You is one book to movie that you will not regret reading first….. and you will full on love the way they cast the movie – they chose the perfect actors to bring these characters to life! A Tale of Two Cities….I’d forgotten about that one! Reminds me of Sophomore English class….not sure that’s a good thing. 😉

  • I hear ya on finding the time….that’s why I have to make lists or I’ll never get it in….it’s too easy to just zone out while watching television. I also have a strict no tv in the bedroom deal with my husband and since we removed the tv years ago that has also upped my reading time.

  • I read The Zookeeper’s Wife a good while back. I don’t remember loving or disliking it. I’m currently binge-reading the Poldark series by Winston Graham after getting sucked into the series on PBS- primarily because I want to find out what happens after season 2. Season 3 isn’t coming fast enough! 🙂 I am like you though, reading then tv. When Outlander (which I also binge-read) and Pildark come back on, reading is on hold!
