Recently on Audible & The Book You Must Read Before March

I was reluctant to embrace audio books.  It felt like cheating.  Somehow it seemed like it didn’t really count as reading.  But this year I threw out all my preconceived notions and decided to give audible a try.  And it’s safe to say I’m hooked!  Don’t get me wrong, I still love to hold a good book in my hands and feverishly flip through her pages.  But audible fills the gaps in my lifestyle where it’s just impossible to sit down with a real book.  It makes DIY projects more enjoyable, and it even makes doing laundry slightly more palatable.

Giving the gift of Audible would be such a great idea for any bookish friends on your gift list……or for anyone who travels a lot.  There are 3, 6 and 12 month memberships available for gifting.  (No, this is not a sponsored post.)

Recent Favorites on Audible

Two books I really enjoyed over the past month are Talking As Fast As I Can by Lauren Graham and Reading People by Anne Bogel.

Talking As Fast As I Can

If you or anyone you know is a fan of Gilmore Girls or Parenthood, this book is a must.  It’s part memoir part anecdotal essays, and it all adds up to really good fun!  The added benefit of the audio version is listening to Lauren Graham herself read….and sing just a little bit.  I was already a super fan, but I may have reached full on stalker status after this book.  She’s just so fun and quirky and real and honest and grateful and humble………and I could go on and on.  But really you should just get the book.  😉

Reading People

I’ve been a fan of the blog Modern Mrs. Darcy for quite a while, so I was eager to read this book.  I found it completely fascinating, and I think it’s one that everyone should read.  I’m actually planning to get a hard copy of it because I’d like to be able to go back through and reread sections from time to time.  The book explains the most popular personality frameworks such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, StrengthsFinder, Enneagram, and others. But Anne explains it all in a way that is understandable and relatable.  She shares her own life experiences highlighting how the insights to be gained from understanding our own personality as well as the personalities of the people in our lives can positively affect our relationships. I really wish this book had been written when I was back in my twenties.  But I guess it’s never too late to figure out who you are.  😉

This would make a great gift for anyone who loves a good personality quiz.

Stop and Read This Now

I read A Wrinkle In Time when I was in 6th grade, checked it out of my school library.  It’s on my list of treasured childhood favorites along with The Chronicles of Narnia, Where the Red Fern Grows and Anne of Green Gables.  So I’m beyond excited to see the movie that is coming out March 2018!  The cast itself with  Oprah and Reese Witherspoon, to name a few, is fantastic, so I’m sure this movie is going to be phenomenal.

I’m currently reading the book with my daughter.  Rereading favorite books from my childhood with my children is always so special.   If you’ve never read this wonderful classic you really should!  And if you have any book-loving children (around the ages of 10 to 13) on your gift list, this would make an excellent gift!  This book is actually the first in a series of five, and the boxed set would be such a great Christmas present.

  • Hi Carmel,
I love your idea of a book to read with my child, especially my 11yo daughter who has a hard time finding something compelling enough to pick up! Do you think this particular book would be of interest to a boy, too? He will inevitably want to be included in any group activity. Curious to hear your thoughts.

  • Love your list! I just started “The Road Back to You” by Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile from Audible- I find it fascinating! I’ll probably need to grab it in hard-cover to go back and mark up. Merry Christmas!

  • Yes I think its great for both girls and boys. It’s fantasy/science-fiction and the previews for the movie look like it’s going to be really great!

  • Hi Carmel! New to your blog and now I need to get the Lauren Graham book and talking as fast as you can. I love getting new suggestions on reading material. Look forward to catching up on your other posts as well. Keep up the great work!

  • My daughter is 12 and really has a hard time picking up a book. But when she likes one she reads until it is finished. She is reading Little Women for school and the teacher gave them a link for an audible to follow along. I am reading it with her. It is so much fun to do this with her.

  • I can’t listen to books (though I LOVE to read and usually have a few going at a time). I have a long commute (30 miles each way) and have tried audio books and podcasts but they put me to sleep – have to have music to stay energized and gear up for day/decompress on the way home. BUT – as an FYI for anyone whose public library has access to Overdrive or other ebook systems – they have digital audio books available too. I’ve done that for road trips with my husband -we don’t share many musical tastes 😉

  • Thanks and welcome Samantha! Book review posts only come about once a month, but they’re some of my favorite posts to write! I love recommending a good book!

  • After reading this post last week, I ordered the Wrinkle in Time series for my 12 year old daughter as a Christmas present. The next day she had a copy of the book and was reading it… for school! I sure hope she likes it since the rest of the series will be hers in two weeks and, as you mentioned – movie!
    Yay!
