Summer BlogTour of Homes

Today I’m excited to be participating in a summer blogtour of homes hosted by Marty at A Stroll Thru Life.  It’s always fun to participate in these seasonal virtual home tours!  If you’re popping over from the last stop at ZDesign At Home, welcome to Our Fifth House!  I’m Carmel, a design enthusiast and DIY dabbler, who is all about having more design FUN and worrying less about the rules.  If there’s a design rule I follow it’s this: A home should reflect the personality of the people that live under its roof.

Come On In!

summer home tour

Even though the name of my blog is Our Fifth House, I’m currently living in house number six.  My family and I moved from Lexington, KY to Charleston, SC about two years ago.  We *think* we’re settled for good this time, but we’ve learned to never say never.  😉

One of my very first projects after unpacking 2 years ago was to paint our front door pink.  It made such a huge difference to the front exterior of our home!  It gave it such a happy, welcoming look.

Entry Foyer

Last year I spruced up our entry foyer adding grasscloth paper to the walls, a coat rack and painting the doors black.

I recently framed and hung this floral piece my mom painted.

I’m currently working on finishing my home office which you can see a glimpse of in this photo below.

Dining Area

As you can probably tell I don’t really do too much “summer” decorating.  I really just like to bring in fresh flowers and clippings from the yard.  I tend to go for a less-is-more style during the summer months.  A simple vase with flowers is just enough to give our dining area a sweet, summer vibe.  And it’s even better when you snag the cutest red and white striped vase in the Target dollar spot!

Living Room

Not long after we moved in I painted the bookcases in our living room charcoal gray and added the same grasscloth paper that is in our entry to the backs.   I love restyling them for every season.

Screen Porch

Most days you’ll find me out here on our screen porch.  I love beginning and ending my day out here.  I recently brought in these new striped cushions, and I’m just slightly obsessed with them.

  • I love reading your blog and have followed through for a few years. I’m wondering if I can ask more about your porch construction. We need to rebuild our front and back porch and I like the design of yours. We have wooden porches with wooden rails and stairs and I guess metal (?) columns. I’ve been debating about going with wood when we rebuild. Can you tell me what the materials are on yours? I love the way they look. It looks as if the floor is wooden but the rails are metal or some sort of plastic material? Your home looks so nice and cozy and inviting!!

  • Thanks for sharing your home! I love all your rooms and the pink door is the perfect light shade of pink. I love your brown worn leather couch too.

  • I love that pink door, how fun is that and your screened porch would be where you would find me all day. I agree, those striped pillows are fabulous. Thanks so much for joining the tour, your home is always a delight.

  • Hey, Carmel,

Followed you for a while and love your style! Can you share what cleaner and/or conditioner you use on your leather sofa? Mine is starting to look so dull.

    Thanks!

  • Regarding the front doors, exterior is pink, interior black, so what color is the edge that you would see when it is opened. What are your thoughts on which color to choose?

  • It feels like you’ve lived here forever Carmel! All your houses have been well-styled and feels homey for sure and your summer tour is beautiful as the ones in the past! As always, honored to share this home tour with you, Cheers!

  • Hi Pam! Thanks! I’ve never conditioned the leather. I use a soft damp cloth every few weeks, but that’s about it.

  • Thanks so much Magen! It’s all wood, the floors and columns. The columns are painted and the floors stained with a solid stain.

  • Wow, you did an amazing job! I never thought a pinkish color for a front door would look nice, but it definitely goes well together with your home. Thanks for sharing.
