DIY Raised Garden Box

Long time readers know my dad pretty well, not because he’s been in many photos here on the blog (he’s camera shy) but because his handiwork has been featured quite a bit over the years.  He did A LOT for us at our last house.  He built my kiddos an amazing playhouse/swingset, installed a paver patio and a fire pit, gave our basement fireplace a makeover and built a couple of raised garden boxes.

We’ve been in our Charleston, SC home for almost two years now, and even though my dad lives in Southern California, every time he visits he leaves his DIY mark.  He was just here visiting with us over the past couple weeks and built two raised garden boxes.  I absolutely LOVED the garden boxes we had at our last home, so I’m thrilled to finally be back in the gardening business!  I can not wait to watch this garden grow!

Herb and Vegetable Garden Boxes

I wanted a box for herbs and one for vegetables.  We placed them so that they flank the gate in the fence on the side of our backyard.

While my dad put these garden boxes together for me, their construction was pretty straightforward.  You don’t need to be an expert DIY’er to build these, and you don’t even need to own a saw.  You could have all of the wood cut at the hardware store.

The side ledges we added on top add stability as well as a spot to sit.

I’m so excited to watch things grow!  I can’t wait to have fresh herbs and vegetables this summer!

  • Termites are a really big problem here, so I went with pressure treated wood. They no longer use CCA to treat, so while it’s not completely ideal it’s safe to use.
