Kitchen Range Hood Options

I’ve wanted to remove the cabinet and range hood over the gas stovetop in our kitchen for a more substantial range hood since we moved in almost two years ago.  But I didn’t want to rush into any big design changes.   I wanted to live with this space for awhile first.  So I put that change on the back burner (see what I did there 😉 ) and made a few small-ish tweaks in here like changing the cabinet hardware, replacing the kitchen faucet and adding a couple of pendant lights over the island.  Those small but mighty changes definitely made an impact, and now I feel ready to bring in a larger range hood and really up the custom look of our kitchen.

Before

Here’s a look at our open-concept kitchen as it was shown in the real estate listing.  I fell in love with the hardwood floors.  In addition, the cabinet color and style was a big selling point for me.  I especially liked that the island was a different color from the rest of the cabinets.

Currently

We were grateful to move in to an already beautiful kitchen.  And just the few little changes we’ve made so far have definitely stamped this open-concept kitchen with some major Phillips family style.

The red barstools not only add a happy punch of color in this all-neutral kitchen, but they also lighten the heaviness of the black island.  Painting the pantry door was an easy way to add interest to the back wall.  But I’d have to say the lighting changes are the real stars of the show.  The chandelier and pendants over the island add so much personality to the space and really help to visually distinguish the dining area from the kitchen.

I know that removing the cabinet and range hood currently over the stovetop isn’t a “necessity”, but I also know that bringing in something with more visual bang will really up the custom look of the whole space.

As it stands right now we don’t use the cabinet over the range at all.  There is absolutely nothing in there.  So we won’t be losing any needed storage space.  We also have extra backsplash tile on hand, so we can raise the height of the hood without issue.  Elevating the hood will showcase the backsplash so much more.

Decisions, Decisions

Now that I’m absolutely certain that I want to remove the cabinet and hood currently in place, I need to decide what style hood with which to replace it.

Stainless Steel?

With the all stainless appliances, going with a stainless hood seems like the obvious choice.  However this is also an open-concept floor plan and I’m not sure stainless is the right option for the overall design of the space.  If this was a stand alone kitchen or even one that is just open to the dining area that would be one thing.  But this is a stacked kitchen – dining – living room floor plan, and I feel like maybe a stainless hood will be a bit too industrial looking.  I’m trying to keep all the functionality but down play the utilitarian look of this space.

Match the Antique White Cabinets?

Considering a cabinet style wood hood, I originally thought matching the white cabinets would be a nice look. But then I wonder if matching the cabinets will blend in too much.  It probably wouldn’t look much different from what we have now, so then what would be the point in changing it at all?

Black to match the Island and Pendants?

So I’m leaning toward going with a cabinet style hood in black to balance out the black island and pendants.  I think a black hood in the middle of the antique white cabinets will be bold but classic and really bring together all the black elements in the space.

What Do You Think?

As per usual, as soon as I think I’ve made up my mind, I change it again.  😉   So I’d love to hear your thoughts!  Would you choose option 1 – stainless steel to match the other appliances, option 2 – black cabinet style to match the island and pendants, or 3 – walnut cabinet style to match the dark-stained wood floors?  Or are you in the camp that thinks I should go with a white cabinet style to match the rest the cabinets on that wall?

I’ve been pinning lots of kitchen inspiration images lately, and most of them do have black hoods among white cabinets. But the  all-white spaces are really pretty too!

So what do you all think?  What option do you like best?

  • Black all the way. I thought I the wood would make it look like you tried too hard to match the floors. The stainless will be too cold. The black would be stunning and look purposeful.

  • Black or wood. I know stainless is popular, but I’m not a fan. Not a trend follower either. I think matching the cabinets would blend in too much also. Love the black but the wood would look great too!

  • Would you consider copper? I know that wouldn’t match the other stainless elements but copper hoods are so pretty! Of your 3 choices I would say black goes with the rest of your style the most.

  • I’m leaning toward the black option first… either in cabinet style or maybe what about a matte metal? That could look really aaaamazing! Or the wood option. I think stainless is a bit of a trend and if you ever want to switch out your appliances for a charcoal stainless or some other new and upcoming color/finish, then you’re stuck with the stainless hood. However, you clearly love black so that’s not going anywhere as an accent in your home 🙂 As well as your hardwoods. So black or walnut seems the more sustainable, long term choice but not safe either. Looking forward to seeing what you choose!

  • I agree that doing similar to cabinets would hardly be a change so that wouldn’t make sense. I think stainless is expected so I’d go black. Or what about something totally different and more of a deep copper which I originally thought #3 was. Might be too jarring but thought I’d through it in the mix

  • Agree that a hood would make the backsplash more noticeable! I thik that the long view (second picture with your daughter in the chair) of this space reveals a fairly chaotic scheme ( I don’t mean chaotic to be negative)- with lots of different colors and styles and layers (fancy chandler, then very basic but large black pendant lights that really draw attention, layered rug, red chairs, white chairs, dark metal chairs etc) , so i would look for something that blends in well and is soothing – maybe match the cabinets ?

  • The wood. Definitely, the wood! Not only will it help all three spaces read more as one, not to mention the stairwell, but the richness it will add to the kitchen will be amazing, IMO.

  • Thanks for your thoughts! I’ve also been thinking of replacing the refrigerator for a cabinet paneled one. Our refrigerator is starting to give us some issues, so replacing it is in our near future anyway. I was thinking a cabinet door paneled fridge that matched our cabinets would blend in so much better. And if I do replace the stainless fridge for a white cabinet paneled one…..a stainless hood would really look out of place.

  • Ha! I think chaotic describes my style or at least my life rather perfectly. 😉 These are all progress photos. I’m big on using what you have when you move and slowly figuring out what will and won’t work in your new place. The metal chairs aren’t really vibe-ing too well in here but we’ve had them for years and I do really love them. I might be moving them to our patio since they’re indoor/outdoor galvanized steel. I’d like to bring in white bentwoods to match the style of the barstools and add some balance to the white cabinets. Anyhow, I think what makes things look busy is all the different styles and colors of chairs……that and I didn’t edit the countertop styling before I snapped these. There’s way too much on the counters in these photos.

  • We’re currently building and I chose a white vent hood to match my cabinetry with lots of trim and molding. I almost went with a wood one for contrast, but I love an all white kitchen. I’m not a fan of the stainless steel because there’s nothing custom about them. They look like you just bought it from Lowe’s or any random “big box store”. I never considered black, but I bet that will look gorgeous!

  • The most “timeless” voice is to match your white cabinets. Definitely not stainless.

  • Black with a brass/antique gold trim of some sort to tie in your faucet. I would recommend something easily removable in case (when) you tire of it.

  • I would go with black!!! However, I am not one to follow design rules…..when it comes down to it, I think you have to go with whatever “talks” to you and only you. Have fun making your final decision!! I remember when you got your red barstools….love those!! Happy weekend!

  • Before I even read that you thought about a cabinet style hood in black, that’s what I was thinking. Obviously, whatever you choose should be what you love, but I like the black option. Can’t wait to see it! 🙂

  • It’s amazing how your tweaks so far have already changed up this space so much. I too think black would look amazing there and tie into your pops of black elsewhere. Such a pretty kitchen Carmel!

  • Black! I like how the black pendants, railing and island anchor the room and a black range hood will add to that without sucking too much light out of the room.
