Disguising an Outlet

Earlier this year I gave our laundry/mudroom a makeover.

Revamping this little space has made doing the laundry feel like less of a chore.  That’s a lie.  It still feels like a chore.  But at least now I have a pretty space to Cinderella in.  😉

Oddly Placed Outlets

When the makeover was done there was still one little aspect of the space that kind of bugged me.   Like why on God’s green Earth would anyone place an outlet here?   Why not farther down the wall where it would be hidden behind the washing machine?  I hate to say it, but ladies, a man was clearly behind this.  Am I right?  #imnotamanbasher #butispeakthetruth

I know.  It’s a laundry room.  Get over yourself.

But I’d be totally lying if I didn’t confess to scouring Pinterest for “clever ways to disguise an outlet”.   It’s silly and it’s not that big of deal; but it just bugged me.  And I am who I am, so I needed to solve this issue no matter how ridiculous and insignificant.

It was like every time I walked in the door from the garage this outlet was slapping me in the face.  #dramaticmuch   But relocating this outlet farther down the wall sounded like a lot of effort (and probably a waste of money) for something that just isn’t that big of a deal.

A majority of the ideas I found regarding “outlet disguising” centered around creating a gallery wall around the outlet, but I didn’t want to hang frames in here because I knew they would just end up collecting dust.

InstaPrints And Washi Tape To The Rescue

Instead I opted to go with Instagram prints and washi tape!

*Little tip – There’s an app called Printicular that makes ordering prints off your phone and other social media channels a breeze!   The app is free and the prints are affordable.

I solved this little “issue” cheaply and easily.  And now I have a collage of memories slapping me in the face instead of just an outlet.  🙂

It really does help the outlet to blend in rather than stick out like a soar thumb.  Plus I like that it’s fun and kind of whimsical……but also easy to remove if I tire of this look.

Do you have any oddly placed outlets in your home?  Do they drive you batty or am I the only crazy lady here?

  • Carmel, I have the exact same problem – but I also have that nasty hose box staring me in the face. I love your idea and I came up with a similar one to “disguise the uglies”. I hung a string with clothespins and I hung photos across on that. I think I like your idea better because I ended up knocking mine down over time. I happened to ask my electrician about moving the outlet and he discouraged me from doing it because in case of an emergency, you are supposed to be able to unplug easily. Also, supposedly that hose box is supposed to be at a certain (eyesore) height. I don’t understand how 90 percent of the laundry rooms I see online don’t have this problem but I guess I am one of the “lucky” ones. Anyway, great solution!

  • Hi Carmel,
Paint the visible part of the cord the same as your wall color, or if you’re not comfortable doing that, wrap it in uas similar to the wall color as possible. You won’t even notice it then.

  • It is maddening. My washing machine water lines and drains stick up just above my washer! And, they are a very unfortunate shade of off white. Why???????

  • They have to be placed that high for safety reasons, you don’t want any water dripping “down the cord” onto an outlet should there be an issue with an overflow from the washer. Great cover up/blending in solution.

  • I had my husband move the water lines and drain for our washer because they were above the washer like your outlet is. I couldn’t sleep with that situation going on in the laundry room!

  • So nice to have a hubby that could handle a project like that! Glad I’m not the only one that is bothered by things like that. 🙂

  • I considered painting the cord but it’s hard to know how far down to take the paint since you can see behind the machine a little bit from the side. This is the only house we’ve had that the outlet is this high up on the wall.
