10 Solid Pillows That Are Anything But Basic

Last week I shared a collection of no-fail pillow pattern combinations to boost your pattern mixing confidence, but today I’d like to give a shout out to the trusty, steadfast solid.  As much as I LOVE pattern, I do believe every space needs some grounding solids.  I often think decorating or designing a room is a lot like putting together a play or a musical.  In every show there are main characters or stars as well as supporting roles.  Each role is different – some have more significance or garner more time in the spotlight – but each is an important part of the show as a whole.  The same is true in a room.  There are those elements that are show stoppers, that immediately draw the eye to them, and then there are those pieces that are a bit more understated yet equally important.  That’s how I think about solids in a space.  They’re the supporting roles.  And while they may not always be show stoppers, they deserve to shine in their own right.

Solid Pillow Winners

Solids don’t have to be boring or basic.  They can provide their own subtle interest.  These ten solid pillows are anything but basic!

  1. Velvet is a year-round yes!  It provides beautiful soft texture to any space.
  2. Say yes to contrasting trim.  This is a little detail with major visual bang for the buck!
  3. Mongolian fur adds so much great texture and whimsy to a room.
  4. Fringe brings in a bohemian flair.
  5. Just as chambray works in your wardrobe as a neutral the same is true in interiors.  It adds a casual, effortless feel to a room.
  6. Crocheted knits are cozy and super textural.  They’re great to play with in all-neutral toned interiors.
  7. Leather adds a masculine vibe that helps to balance feminine details in a space.
  8. Color blocked pillows play on the border of pattern.  They add interest and are easy to work in but never feel too visually chaotic.
  9. Fur whether real or faux adds warmth and coziness.  While traditionally used in the winter months, I think fur pillows work well in bedrooms year round.  And as we’re heading towards spring the sale prices make them much more attractive!
  10. Last but not least, textured linen offers a subtle texture that adds loads of interest to a space.

Velvet is My Personal Favorite

I love the soft sheen velvet brings to a space.  Cozy but chic.

If you prefer to stick with solids as opposed to layering in some pattern, be sure to mix your textures up to keep things interesting!  Leather and velvet make for a winning combination.

  • Thanks for the pillow advice. I notice you have some of the most beautiful round gold mirrors in some of your rooms. Are they a matte finish or bright gold? I am trying to find one in a subdued or perhaps brushed finish. Any suggestions on where to find such an animal?

  • I love that fringed pillow! I confess that I put my velvet pillows away for the warmer months. They just seem to me “warm and cozy for colder weather”, along with my fur and heavy throws.

  • Yes that is the same one I have in our guest bedroom! I also have a much larger version that is also a matte gold from CB2. West Elm also has some similar options.

  • Not on subject, but I must ask where o’ where did you get the wall pockets?? Am assuming they are black & white–I love them…need them…
    Thanks,
    Susan
