How to Pack for a Week in a Carry On

I follow one rule when I fly ~ no checked bags.  Whether I’m going away for a long weekend or a full week, I’m a carry on girl.  Checking bags is just such a hassle.  Even when the process works perfectly, it slows you down in both arriving and departing. Plus most airlines charge for checked bags these days, so all in all, carrying on is the way to go!  Friends of mine are always so surprised to hear that I only travel with a carry on, so I thought with vacation season upon us I’d share a few of my tried and true packing tips today.

My Travel Tips:

~ Select and stick to a wardrobe color palette.  When every piece of clothing coordinates with each other you can create quite a few different outfits with just a few main pieces.  And you won’t need more than two shoe options.

~ Wear your bulky pieces on the plane.  It’s typically chilly on an airplane, so this is a pretty easy thing to do even in the summer months.

~ Roll your clothes or use the KonMari folding method to save on space.  Bonus, this also helps with wrinkles!

~ Coconut oil packets (find them at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods) take up practically no space at all and take the place of your makeup remover and body lotion.  One packet will last about 7 days.

travel toiletries

~ Recycle and reuse small product containers – like eye creams – for liquid foundation and moisturizer.   I always put a small dot of nail polish on the bottom of my empty containers, so I know they’re no longer holding what the container says they are.

~ Pare down your makeup bag by grabbing multi-functional products like Beautycounter’s Color Pinch Cream Blusher, which can be used as blush, eyeshadow and lip color.  I use these cream blushers all the time at home, but when I travel they’re pretty much all I use, besides mascara.

travel toiletries

~ Don’t forget you get one personal item in addition to your carry on.  I always travel with a large tote bag that can hold my laptop, camera, a book, my wallet and makeup bag.  Then I tuck a small crossbody bag in my roller board, so I don’t have to use a large tote everywhere I go once I get to my destination.

It’s like an art form, and I’ve nearly mastered the art of packing light. 😉  My whole family carried on when we went to Italy last year, and it was a game changer!  Beginning a trip with a simple packing routine starts your vacation on a great note and makes the task of unpacking when you get back home feel like less of a chore!

  • I always fail at packing light. Can you give a list of what you would pack for a weeklong trip?

  • Like you, I can do nothing but a carry on and still have plenty of options for a week.

  • Our family carries on as well! We like to stay at hotels with on-site laundry facilities, so we can wash and re-wear outfits if needed. One of my favorite tips is to use contact lens cases for eye cream, face lotion, etc. Also, shampoo bars are great and don’t have to go in your quart bag!

  • I do carry on as well, for toiletries, if the hotel doesn’t have it in the room, I go to a local drugstore and purchase what I need. I only take 2 pairs of shoes or sandals depending on the season, I wear one and take one that matches everything, 2 pairs of slacks 4 tops mix and match, you can wear things twice, no one knows who you are,

  • It depends on where and what time of year, but I’d say generally speaking….. I usually wear jeans and a comfy blouse layered with a jacket or cardigan on the plane. I also wear the most bulky shoes on the plane as well. Then I pack a long dress (one that can I can layer a shirt or sweater over), a tank dress, a denim skirt and a couple of button downs with a few tshirts. I might pack a pair of shorts or a lightweight pant too. I tend to pack more dresses because you can wear them alone or layer a t-shirt or buttoned down over the top and get a whole different look out one dress.

  • Carmen—
First time commenter. I love the variety of content on your site. This particular post spoke to me, as I’m an avid carry-on-only traveler and have been fortunate enough to travel from the U.S. all over the world with my husband and 3 kids…all with carry-on luggage. It’s made our lives so much easier and encouraged us to take trips most of our friends would never dream of taking. Our oldest child is now 21 years old and traveling through India this summer with only a carry-on piece! Our kids literally can’t conceive of doing it another way. It is such a freeing travel philosophy. Thanks for your insights!

  • I am a Single Mom by Choice. Two kids. When the kids were ages 1 and 4 we took a 10 day trip to Scotland to visit friends. I took ONE rolling-bag carry on. The 4 year old had a small back pack and I had a regular back pack ad my one bag carry on (that had mainly diapers and kid stuff for the plane). I carried the 1 year old’s car seat like a back pack (using the straps) on my shoulder. I had the 1 year old in an ubrella stroller with my back pack hanging on the arm of the stroler. The 4 year old cold walk. No bag checking- nothing lost. Before I had kids (at the age of 40) I traveled extensively for work and plesure. Whether I was going for a weekend or a month, I used the same rolling carry on suitcase. I think one big thing is not to bring too many shoes! They take up a lot of space! Always wear bulkiest shoes on the plane and bring ONE OTHER PAIR in the carry on!
