Homemade Pumpkin Coffee Facial Scrub and Mask

You already know I’m the self-proclaimed Chief of The Safer Beauty Tribe.  So it should come as no surprise that as much as I enjoy buying safer skincare and cosmetics, I’m also a huge fan of good old-fashioned, all-natural, homemade skincare concoctions.  And with pumpkin season upon us, I thought you might also like to give my favorite Pumpkin Coffee Facial Scrub and Mask a try.  I guarantee you probably already have the ingredients in your pantry.  So you could easily whip up this 3-ingredient mask in the next 5 minutes, and treat your skin to a little fall-inspired at home spa treatment.

Just 3 Simple Ingredients

Not only is this facial mask recipe just 3 ingredients.  But the measurements are 3 – 2 – 1 tablespoons, so the recipe is an easy one to remember!

3 Tablespoons Raw Honey

2 Tablespoons Pumpkin Puree

 1 Tablespoon Finely Ground Coffee

Honey

Raw honey has been used in skincare for centuries.  Honey is naturally antibacterial, so it’s wonderful for both acne treatment and prevention.  It slows down aging because it’s antioxidant-rich.  And honey is a humectant, so it moisturizes your skin boosting the glow of your complexion.  For this scrub/mask I prefer to use raw wildflower honey, but any kind of raw honey will work.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin packs some seriously amazing benefits for your skin!  It’s packed with fruit enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which increase cell turnover to both brighten and smooth the skin.  High in both Vitamin A and C, it helps to soften and soothe the skin while boosting collagen production.

Coffee

Ground coffee is a natural exfoliator, and much gentler than store bought scrubs using seeds and ground nuts.   It is high in antioxidants, which help to reduce free radicals and signs of aging.  And you may be surprised to learn that the caffeine in coffee helps to reduce puffiness and inflammation, so you don’t want to use decaf grounds for this scrub.  (I recommend using organic coffee.)

  • Using spent coffee grounds (grounds leftover from your morning cup) will make for a more gentle facial scrub.

Why I Call This a Scrub and a Mask

I refer to this as both a scrub and a mask because I use it as both.  Once the three ingredients are well mixed together, I gently apply it to my skin with my fingers.

And I let it sit on my skin for about 15 to 20 minutes before I gently scrub in a circular motion for maybe 30 seconds.  And then rinse it off with warm water.  Leaving this mixture on the skin for a period of time allows the skin to really reap the benefits of the honey and pumpkin, and then gently scrubbing for 30 seconds puts the ground coffee to work leaving the skin feeling super soft and smooth.

  • If you have sensitive skin that doesn’t tolerate scrubs well, leave out the coffee grounds and instead add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to create a non-abrasive mask.

I love that this homemade scrub/mask delivers powerful benefits to the skin, but is gentle enough for my daughter to use too!
