House #7 – Black or White Windows?

If you’ve been following me on Instagram you know I’ve been wrestling with whether to go with black or white interior windows for our seventh house.

You wouldn’t think something like windows would make for such a tough decision, especially considering I’m deciding between black or white, not 31 flavors.  😉  But I’m struggling, and I have to make a decision by next week.  I feel like this decision is so weighty for me because it will really set the tone, and in many ways dictate the design choices I make for the rest of the house.

My husband is on Team Pick One I Don’t Care Just Make A Decision Already Because I’m Tired of Talking About It.  😉

So I’m hoping you all will be the sounding board I need to come to a final decision.  SO many of you have already weighed in with your thoughts via my instastories this week, and your responses have been SO HELPFUL already!

Black Exterior Windows and Doors – I’m Going For It!

We’ve already decided, positively, resolutely, that we want all black windows and doors for the exterior.

You might remember that we’re going with a light shade of pink – a barely there pink – for the exterior, and I think the black doors and windows along with all white trim will balance the sweetness of the pink.

But Whether to Go with Black or White on the Interior Has Me Stumped

This coming week we will be finalizing our plans, so I really need to make a decision.  I’ve spent a ton of time researching, pinning, flipping through design books and magazines over the past year.  And I thought for sure when it came time to build this house I’d want black interior windows.  But as the deadline to finalize this choice moves closer, I’ve been having second thoughts.  And not just because the black interior option is more expensive.

While some may caution that black is “trendy” I feel that although black is on trend at the moment, it’s still a very classic look, one that dates back to the 19th century.  Black windows aren’t new.  They’re just having their day in the sun again.  So it’s not the idea that they may go “out of style” that is holding me back.  I think even when they’re no longer on trend they’ll still look stunningly classic.

Black windows are statement makers.  That’s the reason I’ve always loved them!  But there’s a lot to consider in choosing them for your entire house, for every room in your house.

Window Coverings?

Blinds or shutters would feel too heavy on black, at least for my taste.  And even a roller shade or bamboo would hide some of the window, somewhat defeating the purpose of having such statement making windows.  But privacy is something I would imagine wanting to have, in bedrooms and bathrooms at least.  So considering what rooms I would want window coverings in does gives me pause on black as an option.

But these examples of black windows with coverings are really stunning.

Designing Around Black Windows

Because they’re so statement making, black windows would be a design element that would need to be designed around/with in every space.  Easier to do in spaces like a kitchen or even a dining room, but a little trickier in rooms with lots of textiles/patterns/colors.  White windows tend to disappear from a design standpoint creating more of a blank canvas.  But black windows are showstoppers.  That’s what I’ve always LOVED about them.  But now I wonder if I want the windows to be the star of the show in every room of our home.

What I don’t want to do is choose white because it’s safer, easier.  If I choose white I want it to be because I’ve decided black just isn’t the right call for the design direction I want to go in for this house.

  • I love the look of black windows. I lived in a 50’s cracker box of a house when we were first married and had black metal windows. Energy efficient, no, but they looked good. I guess it’s your own personal style. It is trendy. I think if you ask yourself will I like this in 10 years, the answer will be no. Decor trends change rapidly. BUT will you hate on the white ones for the next 10 years and be miserable every darn day? Follow your heart!

  • Could you choose white for the rooms that you want the windows to be a supporting element rather than a statement? And then you could black in the windows that you want them to be a key element? For instance, if you wanted to do a bold laundry room with on-trend tile choices, you could put a black window in the there to help play up the tile. But then in bedrooms that you might want to be less bold, or at least with fewer statement pieces, you could just do white windows? Just a thought. I’m loving following along!

  • I would prefer to do white on the interior. I feel like the black is trendy. My own preference would be to just have white because it’s more flexible and would stand the test of time. I like the black on the exterior.

  • I am loving the new black windows, however we are going with white exterior and interior because of our architecture. I will say pick one or the other, don’t mix the interiors based on rooms. Given the colors I have seen you gravitate toward in your decor, black would work for you. Black is just as classic as white, and can be used in any decor style (farmhouse, modern, traditional, etc). I know I am not much help, but honestly don’t think you could go wrong with either.

  • Black on the outside- absolutely! I have owned homes with both white and black interior windows. ⚫️⚪️ My advice is white on the inside. I currently have white, large 4 pane French windows. They are beautiful, classic and truly compliment (and don’t compete with) all of my window coverings. I agree with all of the points on your post- I think you are spot on. ? The other reason I would suggest white is that they truly make my house feel lighter and brighter- I am all about natural light and white just seems to feel airier!

  • I totally would go with black on the outside but white on the inside. That would keep all the inside so clean and bright. Black on the inside definitely brings attention to the windows. If that is part of the design that you like, then go for it.

  • I don’t think black is trendy. Your pics show that you can have black windows and the beams or lighting can still be the star. Also, the black can take lots of texture or… not. Follow your gut. I’m sure it will be beautiful whichever you choose.

  • Black on the inside windows. I just love the look and it seems pretty classic as well. I doubt it’ll ever look dated.

  • Black on the outside is stunning. Black on the inside as well will be too much of a good thing. I myself would end up regretting the black windows inside. I like to have a blank canvas to work with year in and year out. The house is gorgeous! Big decision. Good Luck.

  • I can see why you’re struggling with this decision. One thought I had is that perhaps your second thoughts on the black inside is your gut is telling you to go with white, but you are fighting it because your design personality seems to be more on the risk-taking side. Does that make sense?

  • Black outside and mix black on statement windows inside, white the rest. I have a friend who did the very thing in a Tuscany style home – STUNNING!!!

  • I would be happy with black on the exterior, the exterior doesn’t get decorated like the interior. Outside window statement just doesn’t translate so well indoors. I know I would get tired of the heavy feeling of black windows inside. But you might not so go with what you want!

  • I would go with white on the inside if you have a beautiful view, simply so that the windows don’t complete. Black would certainly frame the view, but black cross pieces would detract from it.

  • Carmel I think you should go black. For as long as I’ve been following you you go for the unexpected. I think you will have regrets if you don’t.

  • I love the look of black, but you should consider your view looking out of your windows. With black frames your eyes are directed to the frame not necessarily the view. Visa versa, black is so nice on the exterior because it makes your windows look bigger. The frame + window become one.

  • I think black is classic and has a richness about it. I don’t think it is trendy but timeless. It gives a home a touch that makes it stand out. Good luck choosing.

  • I’d go with white interior windows because the blinds/shades will cover the black anyway and it’s just not practical to have blind-less windows everywhere like in these beautiful inspiration photos. or MAYBE black on the first floor and white upstairs??

  • I say white! Your designs are colorful, sweet, homey. Black is too serious and takes away from your all around design of room. Designers like to change alot so you wouldn’t always have to have the black to fit in. Love it for outside because you can’t change anything and it names that statement. You can get to enjoy it outside and have that blank canvas on inside for your changing artistic directions.

  • I love the idea of black in common rooms (kitchen, dining, living room, mudroom) and white in bedrooms. Bathrooms would depend on tile and fixtures, which I’d probably still lean toward black.
Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong either way, but based on what I’ve seen of your design style, I lean toward black. You’re not afraid to take a risk and make a statement and you always seem to make it work so beautifully.

  • I think you need to decide where you want your eyes to be drawn. If you want it to stop at the windows and have them be the statement then choose black. If you want your eyes to be drawn outside to the view maybe choose white.

  • I have a new construction home that has black exterior and white interior windows. I didn’t know I had an option at the time! I painted my double set of french doors black which takes up an entire wall in my living room and I’m afraid if I did have black interior windows, it would have been too much. I also have several doors in my house painted black and again, with black windows inside it may have been overwhelming. My house is light and airy and I welcome the black contrast of my painted doors. I think it depends on your design plan for the house, but either way- you can’t go wrong!

  • I think the black on the interior has more character which is exactly what you stand for in your current home. Unless you plan to completely change your decor style, I’d stick with the black, girl.

  • Whatever you decide you can’t go wrong but I think black interior windows show off the style, shape and size of a window that goes unnoticed with white windows. I think even in bedrooms they can look cozy. Maybe it’s just pictures I have looked at, including yours above, but the white is washed out and doesn’t add anything to the room. And I don’t agree with those that say you stop at the window and don’t see the view if the window is black.
