House #7 Update – Kitchen Plans

It’s been a little while since my last update regarding house number 7.  And #ourseventhhouse is coming right along.  We have some actual walls now!

house progress

You might remember in my last update I was debating between black or white windows.  And all of the thoughts you shared on that post really helped me to make a decision.  I’m going with black windows for both the interior and exterior, and I can’t wait to see them installed!  When it comes right down to it, I just know I’d always regret not going with my gut on this.  So black it is!

Kitchen Selections and Decisions

With that decision nailed down, I’ve shifted my focus to cabinetry, specifically for the kitchen.  Because the kitchen is the heart of a home and we will have an open floor plan, I feel like the design of this space is integral to the overall design of the house.  And it just feels like the right place to start.  Focusing on one area at a time makes the process feel less daunting.

I’ve always loved the classic look of an all-white kitchen, so the majority of the cabinetry will be white.  However, I also really love color!  So I’m planning to do the island in a shade of blue.

In this pic below you also see a sample of the wood floors which will be white oak finished in a clear matte.

kitchen options

This illustration below is slightly misleading in that I’ve decided not to do glass front cabinets.  After debating this for some time, I think I’d prefer the clean look of cabinet doors as well as not having to keep things neat and tidy.  😉  I’m trying my best to weigh function along with form when making all of these decisions.  And I’m finding it a little tougher to do while planing a new build as opposed to when you’re renovating a home you live in, because you have to think a lot about you *think* you’ll use something.

I’ve yet to select backsplash tile, but it will go all the way up to the crown (which will be white not black).  I plan to bring in two sconces above the windows that flank the hood, but I haven’t chosen the exact ones yet.  I’m thinking brass.  And I plan to do brass cabinet hardware as well to warm things up against the cool white and blue cabinetry.  Although here’s the faucet I’ve selected.  I like mixed metals, always have, so I’m going with polished chrome faucets throughout the house.

delta kitchen faucet

This faucet is by Delta, but I’m told it’s new, which is probably why I wasn’t able to find a link for it online anywhere yet.  This one by Kohler is similar.  I’m going traditional in style for the faucets, and plan to add a touch of modern with the light fixtures.

But back to the island color…..

I’ve eliminated the third shade on the swatch up above as an option because it reads too green for my personal taste.  So now it’s down to either Hunley or Hurricane Blue, both of which are Sherwin Williams colors.  That’s a sample of the countertop, Weybourne Cambria Quartz, against both colors.  I think either work well, but I can’t decide which I like better.

Would love to hear your thoughts!  I’m leaning toward Hurricane Blue at the moment because I like the grey undertones which seem to make this color feel like a good neutral.  But Hunley is pretty striking too.

  • Instantly drawn to hurricane. Like the neutral but with color. May tire of the other. Both beautiful shades.

  • I too like Hurricane Blue. It’s a good neutral. I know you like pops of red and even leopard print, and I think it would work better.

  • So exciting! I think I am leaning towards Hurricane Blue. It’s really pretty and will go well with all your other colors.

  • I love the Hunley, but the Hurricane Blue may be easier to work with for the long haul. What will you do with that beautiful chandelier in you dining area? I just love the look .

  • I like Hunley. The Hurricane Blue reminds me of the dusty blue from the 80’s. 🙂

I feel like Hunley is more saturated and will balance out the black windows and the other bold colors I know you love. Especially red. It will be that pop you need with all the other neutrals.

  • The blue will be so pretty! I would have never thought of putting the stove between the windows. Looks like you have a nice big yard. We are nuts over having our privacy and SPACE. Love I can take the dog out in my nightie and no one ever see me. LOL (Thank goodness!!)

Can’t wait to see it all come together!

  • I’m drawn to the Hurricane Blue color but would say go bold with the Hurley blue! My dream kitchen is a white kitchen with navy blue lowers…so this design is speaking to me! One day, when we’re not renting, hopefully I can design the kitchen of my dreams!

  • Carmel – just found your blog and we’re loving it! Taking the leap into a custom built home takes courage – most people are afraid of the unknowns (you don’t REALLY know what you’re getting until it’s done) but those people miss out on the adventure! We’re on house number three and each one has been a unique and wonderful experience that we wouldn’t trade for anything. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you guys!

  • I wanted a lot of light in our kitchen so I opted to have two small windows flank the hood to create a focal point and bring in lots of sunshine! 🙂
