What do you think of black plantation shutters?

With black windows and doors in this new house, I’m not planning to bring in a lot of window treatments. I really love the simple beauty of the black windows. They are striking and beautiful all on their own. However, there are rooms where privacy is a concern and those windows will require some type of covering. But instead of something made of fabric, I’m thinking of going with black plantation shutters. What are your thoughts?

I know dust could be an issue with black. But being that I’m only planning on covering just a few windows, I feel like the maintenance aspect won’t be too much of an issue.

Plus I’m considering only covering the bottom half of the windows in question.

All I know is three weeks of living with this black sheet taped up has me itching to make a decision!

I wonder if our new neighbors think this is some kind of Halloween decor. Ha!

  • Go for it! Black shutters would look gorgeous. And Swiffer dusters are great for getting the dust between the slats.. 😉

  • I think it will be super dark. I’ve had plantation shutters in a couple of houses (white ones) and they really block a lot of light. There are some newer style plantation shutters that have significantly wider slats and they let in a ton more light. So, if you go with shutters, definitely do the wide slats. We have used the cellular shades in our new house and in our mountain house. While I never would’ve thought I’d like those, I love them. During the day, when they are up, they disappear and we get our beautiful views and all the light coming in (gimme all the light!!!). We close them at night for privacy. You can even get top down ones so you only have to cover part of the window when you need privacy. Go into a window treatment store; there are some really cool products out there now!

  • Love plantation shutters. We have them in our house and wouldn’t have any other window treatment! Absolutely go for it you will not be disappointed
