Four Poster Bed – to Paint or not to Paint?

I’ve finally decided.  For almost two years now I’ve been toying around with the age old ‘to paint or not to paint’ question regarding the traditional four poster bed in our master bedroom, and I’ve finally decided to go for it.  I’m going to have this bed painted black, most likely a high gloss black.  And I can’t wait to see how it looks in the bedroom of our new house!

This bed is over 14 years old.  It was the first brand new piece of furniture my husband and I ever bought, so it holds so much sentimental value.  That’s why making the decision to paint it has not been an easy one.

It’s easy to decide to paint an old, second hand find or something that’s seen a lot of wear and tear.  But this is a quality piece that also holds such a special place in my heart, and it doesn’t have so much as a scratch on it really, even after being moved across states three different times.  I really didn’t want to rush into making a decision about painting it black.

So I just sat on the idea for good long while, pouring through design books, magazines and of course, Pinterest to help me make up my mind.  And in two years time I still want to paint it black, so I feel like that’s a good sign.  Black is classic enough that I don’t think I’ll tire of it, and I think it will still stand the test of time design wise.  Though I also think black, especially a high gloss black, will up this bed’s chic factor, giving it that slight edge that I’ve been longing after.  So black it is!  But I’m going to have it done professionally because I want this paint job done perfectly!

Since we’ll be moving sometime soon, it won’t be too much of an imposition to send this bed off for a couple of weeks to be painted.

The sun has also faded the stain on a couple of the posts, which was just the finally push I needed to go all in on black.  I’m planning to go with black grasscloth wallpaper in our master bedroom at the new house, and I can’t wait to see how this bed in a glossy black will look against that paper!

I’m still on the fence about having this tall dresser painted.  I think I might just leave it in it’s original mahogany finish and pair it with a different mirror.

What are your thoughts?  Do you think I’m crazy for even thinking about painting these pieces?

How do you decide when it comes to the ‘to paint or not to paint’ question regarding furniture pieces?

This is not an April’s Fools joke.  😉  I’m seriously planning to have this bed painted.

  • I would paint the poster bed black but leave the tall dresser alone and maybe add new black pulls to the dresser or have them painted the same glossy black. Looking forward to seeing what you choose.

  • I think high gloss black paint will look lovely and highlight the carvings. Mom painted an old (but in perfect shape) Ethan Allen bedroom set black – made a big difference in changing appearance of the guest room (for the better 😉 If you still want it after thinking on it for 2 years, it’s a good idea!

  • I have the same bed(or incredibly close) that I bought on my honeymoon almost 35 years ago! It’s in perfect shape and I’ve wondered for a few years whether to paint or not…the wood is beautiful. It sometimes pains me to see beautiful wood pieces in good shape painted for the sake of a “trend” but I think a gloss black would be classic and elegant and will highlight the carvings. Can’t wait to see it!

  • Oh I am in the same boat, with exactly the same looking bed. I also have a matching highboy and dresser. We bought ours 27 years ago when bedroom furniture was more matchy matchy. My problem is…we aren’t moving, so it would mean taking it all apart for a few weeks and moving to the guest bedroom with the smaller bed. I keep putting it off even though I’d love to paint it. I am also like you…do I paint the highboy…do I paint the dresser? I can’t wait to see what you decide!

  • I am the dissenter here. That is such a classic staple of a Charleston home and once good wood is painted the piece is never the same. You can have a furniture refinisher repair the damage to blend it in. You can decorate around it but keep it your classic piece in the home.

  • I think black will be great and classic, but I wouldn’t do a high gloss. Every little speck of dust or scratches will show. Besides that, classic black furniture isn’t glossy, just the 80’s were. That’s just my opinion, but if you’re paying someone else to do it, you’ll want it more classic so you can use it forever and black will never go out of style, as well as 4 poster beds.

  • Cant wait to see how this turns out for you. We have the almost exact same rice bed but it is 27 years old. I would love to paint ours but hubs is being a bit reluctant…shall we say. No I don’t think you are crazy at all to want to paint it. Gotta follow your heart!

  • I am normally ALWAYS on “team paint”, but in this case I would leave this bed as is and find another bed to paint in high gloss black. This is such a classic, timeless piece that will never go out of style.

  • I’m glad I didn’t rush into it, and I definitely do feel more confident in choosing to paint it now that I’ve waited for two years and still feel the same way about it. 🙂

  • I agree with Mary C. I would paint it black but definitely not a high gloss black.

  • I’d find a second hand bed to paint and keep the finish on this one. You really can’t go back to original once it’s been painted. Maybe paint the dresser black? with a black or gold mirror?
