First Look at Our Master Bedroom & What Might Be a Huge Mistake

Well friends, I’m getting ready to paint our bed black. I’m equal parts excited and nervous. Insert crazy laugh. If you’ve been around for a while you know this is something I’ve been going back and forth about for a long time. And I’ve pretty much made up my mind. I’m doing this.

I think. 😉

This will either be the best decision ever or the worst. I don’t think there’s an in-between with this one.

I’m actually feeling pretty confident about this decision because I really just don’t like this wood tone anymore. And I haven’t liked it for quite some time. And I think it looks especially off in our new master bedroom with the light wood floors and beams.

But I do still really love the style of this traditional four poster bed, and I think a glossy black will make her shine. A glossy black will give her a more modern feel but still keep her looking pretty classic.

Do you think I’m crazy?

I’m still undecided on the nightstands. I plan to wait until after the bed is painted before I make a decision about them.

I’d love to tell you I that I have a full blown design plan for our new master bedroom, but I don’t. This bed is throwing me off my game so much that I can’t even think up a plan. It’s like a creative road block for me. And I feel like I just need to deal with the bed first, and then hopefully everything else will just come together.

Here’s to hoping this isn’t a huge mistake!

  • I think it is going to look great. The black bed will look good with the lighter wood floors and the black gorgeous windows. I think you will wonder why you fretted (!) so long!

  • I can’t wait to see how it turns out! I have exactly the same bed and I’ve gone back and forth about painting it black for well over a year. I think what is actually stopping me, is that I also have a matching highboy and dresser. Yes…we bought the “SET” 28 years ago, when SETS were still in. I detest that they are all the same now, but what do I do? If I paint everything black…I once again I have a matching set…UGH. I’m stuck.

  • I think you’re right on about doing the bed first and I think you’re right about painting it black. Once it’s a reality, I think your design instincts are going to go all giddy with feelings of freedom and joy and it won’t be long before we’ll be viewing the big, beautiful reveal!!!

  • I totally get what you’re saying Judy! This bed was part of a matching set, but I sold the dresser and armoir when we moved because our bedroom is much smaller here in the new house and we don’t have the room for it. Which is why I think I’m finally ready to paint the bed.

  • Hello
I’m new to your blog!!!I love the traditional/Modern look. Yes I believe that the black color will take this trditional piece to a modern feel. To me it will be the spring board for your personal touches that bring joy to you, and make it more personal.
I can’t wait to see how it all comes togather.

  • I was against the idea at first but I’ve come around. ESPECIALLY since you say you’ve been “over” the wood tone for a while now. You aren’t making a rash decision – you’ve thought it through, pros and cons, seen it in the new space. You’re ready. It will be lovely!!

  • Thank you Carmel. I need to sell my big dresser and highboy and find a couple new pieces that I love!!

  • Can’t wait to see this painted black! I have been throwing this same idea for my sleigh bed for awhile now. Interested to see your process.

  • Love that you’re painting it black. We have a black bed in the master. I saw one and fell in love with the color – it just felt so right. About a month after we got it, I realized why, my grandparents had black bedroom furniture. I think the black bed reminded me of how happy and loved I always felt in their home. I hope your newly painted bed and the design it inspires will give you a warm, loved and happy retreat.

  • First of all mahogany and cherry woods are back in a big way along with brushed brass. Ground your room with a great rug and decide after that. As designers say start with the rug and the tone is set.

  • If you don’t like the black just paint it white. I think you are right that it needs a color. You could even do the night stands in a two tone, color on the bottom and leave the wood on the top. Just sayin….

  • From another Kelly, I totally agree! Go for it! You will love it so much more in your beautiful new home!

  • I think mahogany and cherry are timeless. I’m just not feeling this wood tone in this room with the light floors and beams, which are elements that aren’t going to be changing. So painting the bed is really the best option for me. I waited a while to do this because I wanted to see how this bed would look in our new bedroom first. But having lived it with here for over a month now, I’m ready to see it go black.

  • Absolutely correct Dian night stands should be a bit higher and wider almost the width of the window, the bed will then be grounded. Proper proportions are so important. ?

  • Yes, sometimes the measurements of a room make it hard to follow guidelines. Our master bedroom at the last house was long and narrow and nothing wider than these night stands would fit next to the bed. Now in our new bedroom they look much too small against the wider wall.

  • You use the pieces in different rooms.
    And quality furniture never
    goes out of style.
    Especially in the South!
